Australia and Pakistan end their recent burst of T20 matches on Friday when the two sides meet in the final match of the series between the two in Perth. Australia have already secured half the series and a win here will give them the full chunk of it.
Pakistan are the number one ranked side in the world in this format despite losing their last five matches in T20 cricket. They will be looking to showcase just why they are in such a lofty position in this outing.
Australia
This has been quite some run Australia have put together over the last couple of weeks or so. The difference between their form in this spell and their general indifferent record in this format has been how seriously they have taken it. They have utilised their best players with a serious intent and the results have flown nicely. They are not only winning matches but they are dominating them, already laying down a marker that they mean business in the World T20 next year.
Australia should go well in this format of the game. They have exciting power at the top of their order, no shortage of batting depth and an array of bowlers that are the envy of many. Their home conditions are perfect for them and they are showcasing just why that is. There are still some heavy hitters wanting to get into this side so Australia really are in a wonderful position at the minute.
Pakistan
It is fair to say that Pakistan are in a transitional period even in this format of the game, and to date it is clear things haven’t really settled down hence they have now lost five matches on the bounce. The one good thing is that their captain Babar Azam has continued his good form with the bat in this format. The last thing they needed would have been for the captaincy to become a burden on him and stop his flow of runs.
The negative of that is he’s really the only one in the Pakistan top order who even looks like getting runs so far let alone actually getting them. I don’t think they are going too bad with the ball but even then one over keeps getting away from them which will be an annoyance. I’m expecting to see Pakistan’s best performance of the tour so far, but they’ll need to be that good to have any change here.
Team News
Australia have decided to rest Pat Cummins for this match and save him for the Test series which follows. Sean Abbott and Billy Stanlake are the men fighting it out for his spot in what could be an otherwise unchanged side.
It remains to be seen what new options Pakistan have for this final match. You would think given how well he batted in Canberra that Iftikhar Ahmed could go up the order but in terms of team changes not much looks forthcoming.
Betting
Optus Stadium might be an all-purpose venue that isn’t as small as the grounds used in New Zealand for example but in saying that the conditions are going to be perfect for this match and as such I’m expecting to see a lot of runs and a lot of big hitting so the match outcome isn’t for me but one bet I do like comes in the form of the sixes.
We haven’t really seen this two sides explode with the bat yet but the potential has been there and on a fast and bouncy wicket I expect to see the ball flying here. The straight boundaries on this ground don’t take a lot of finding and while I accept both bowling attacks are decent enough, sometimes you have to play the dimensions of the ground. In doing that over 10.5 sixes is the way to go here.
