Belmont Stakes 2023 – Big Race Tips and Betting Preview

After a high profile meeting at Epsom Downs last weekend, the quality of the UK racing has dried up a little while we wait for Royal Ascot to come along in just over a week. While we wait for the elite meeting to arrive our thoughts for Saturday turn Stateside where a high profile race gets run.

That race is the Belmont Stakes, the final part of the iconic Triple Crown where nine horses will go to post in New York looking to elevate their profile and win one of the biggest races in America. There is one horse in the race we are particularly keen on as you’ll see in our big race preview.

It’s the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, and this one is all about stamina as these 3 year olds step up to a mile and a half.  A small field of 9 go to post and whilst the Preakness winner, National Treasure, is in the field, perhaps the most interesting runner is Forte, a horse who was due to go off favourite in the Kentucky Derby before being declared a non runner in the build up to the race.  Forte has won his last 4, including 3 Grade 1’s, and did beat the Kentucky Derby on his most recent start.  That said, he’s going beyond 9 furlongs for the first time and hasn’t exactly had the smoothest prep so at very skinny odds, he’s one I’m prepared to take on.  Angel Of Empire was 4th in the Kentucky Derby and brings good form to the table but first time blinkers worry me as does the trip whilst Tapit Trice is another to come from the Derby and is more likely to get home but again, his price puts me off.  National Treasure has had his day in the sun in the Preakness and probably won’t be allowed as much rope in front as he was that day.  At bigger odds, Hit Show has a massive shout and cannot be discounted as I’m sure he’ll relish the longer trip and certainly wasn’t disgraced in the Derby.

Betting

Arcangelo – Probably the most unexposed in the field, the selection comes here off the back of just 3 career starts, with the most recent 2 resulting in victories.  His most recent start was in a slow run Grade 3, the Peter Pan, over 9 furlongs here where he showed good speed to make his challenge around the final turn and then battled on to prevail by a neck.   He showed speed and stamina, the front pair clear by almost 9 lengths, and he looked like he’d get further so this trip should bring about further improvement.  He certainly won’t have any concerns from the saddle as we have one of the best in the business aboard and despite his inexperience, that RPR from the Peter Pan of 123 is the best any horse in this field has recorded.   He has a massive chance in a small field at a double figure price.
