It is a top of the table clash in the Big Bash League on Wednesday when the current leaders Brisbane Heat take on the twice champions Perth Scorchers in a huge game for both sides at the Gabba.
The Heat will move four points clear at the top if they win this match and will secure a semi-final spot while Perth will go up to second and could even top the table if they can find a sizeable win of their own.
Brisbane Heat
Brisbane have been quite brilliant in the tournament so far led by the dynamic and aggressive Brendon McCullum. They have blasted sides away with the bat and that has taken the focus away from their bowling attack which is substandard.
Given how well they have batted the bowlers have been able to bowl with more freedom as they know whatever they concede their batsmen can chase down. The test will come when Brisbane are sent into bat again as their only defeat came when they batted first against the Sydney Sixers. They are not built to defend scores.
Perth Scorchers
Perth go into this match off the back of a brutal beating by the Brisbane Heat so it will be interesting to see how they have recovered from that. We’ve reached the stage of the season where ODI call ups are changing things and that might have come at a good time for the Scorchers who were one of the sides least affected.
We know the Scorchers have the best bowling attack in the tournament although it was made to look ordinary by that Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum onslaught at the WACA last week. They will be looking to bounce back as a unit here but on this batting paradise of a Gabba wicket that won’t be easy either.
Team News
Brisbane Heat will be without Chris Lynn who is a huge loss for them. Samuel Badree has been ruled out of the next two matches so Tymal Mills comes in as an overseas player for him. Sam Heazlett replaces Lynn in the squad.
Perth Scorchers will be without Mitchell Marsh and David Willey from here on in. Hilton Cartwright could well replace Marsh while Tim Bresnan has been signed as an overseas replacement for Willey. James Muirhead and Adam Voges remain out.
Betting
I think Perth are the more likely to win this match but as ever on this Gabba track I can’t be betting on the match until I know who is batting second. The side who wins the toss and invariably bowls has a massive advantage here even allowing for the strength of the Perth attack.
With that in mind I will head for the boundaries market where a line of 38.5 still looks on the low side even without Chris Lynn. There is an ODI here on Friday so I’m guessing this wicket will be away from that one and that should create a short boundary which can take a beating somewhere.
Even without Lynn we still have plenty of top class batsmen on show here and with the wicket always of excellent quality and the dimensions within reach wherever the boundary is I’m expecting the boundaries to flow here.
