The Big Bash League stays in Sydney on Wednesday as the defending champions Sydney Thunder look to get their defence back on track when they host the Brisbane Heat.
The Thunder have played two matches this season and lost them both while Brisbane have had just the one run out which they won in dramatic style against the Adelaide Strikers.
Sydney Thunder
After two defeats from two matches this is a match the Thunder can’t afford to lose if they are going to be a significant prospect in this tournament. They won’t have to search too hard to find out where they need to improve. Their scores of 159/8 and 130 just haven’t been good enough and they need to find more runs to be competitive.
If they can find the runs then we know they have more than enough in their bowling attack to get the job done although that attack will be seriously tested here against for my money the biggest hitting batting line up in the competition. How they bowl to them will be interesting.
Brisbane Heat
Going into the tournament Brisbane Heat looked to have a powerful batting line up but a weak bowling attack and if they were to get anything out of the event then Brendon McCullum’s captaincy was going to be key and that is how it played out in their win over the Adelaide Strikers. The Strikers were cruising to victory but McCullum had other ideas.
If the Heat are to do anything in this tournament with regards to making the semi-finals and beyond they are going to have to come up with a formula that takes wickets else they are going to need to keep hitting 200+ and nobody can keep on doing that under pressure.
Team News
The big news for the Thunder is that captain Shane Watson is fit to return for this match. He will boost them with the bat and the ball. Gurinder Sandhu is out of the squad but Aiden Blizzard returns to it.
Brisbane Heat have been forced to use Nick Buchanan in their squad for this match after he replaced Josh Lalor in their roster with Lalor out injured for the remainder of the tournament. The Heat are likely to name an unchanged XI though.
Betting
On what we’ve seen so far I can see why the Brisbane Heat are the favourites in this match but I can’t be backing them myself with their bowling attack, or lack of one. That said I’m in no rush to get stuck into the Thunder until I’ve seen that they have regained their mojo so I’ll head to the other markets in this match.
The sixes line for this one is set at 12.5 but I can’t help but think that is on the low side with the way these two play. I would be concerned that the Thunder are light with the bat but Brisbane’s bowling wouldn’t threaten anyone so there is no reason why two of the bigger hitting sides in the competition won’t put 13 shots over what are pretty small boundaries to clear. I’ll go over on this line.
