The Big Bash League returns from the day off for the second ODI with a battle between two sides who are right in the top four mix in the form of the Sydney Sixers and the Melbourne Renegades at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
With the Hobart Hurricanes seemingly away and clear at the top of the pile it is beginning to look like three from seven for the other spots, in what is fast becoming a fascinating second half of the regular season.
Sydney Sixers
The Sydney Sixers are struggling for consistency at the minute having won three and lost three of their last six matches. Their defeat to the Perth Scorchers last time out will have hurt them but in truth they didn’t do a huge amount wrong, they just ran into an extremely good partnership from two international cricketers.
That should give their bowlers a reminder to maintain their intensity at all times but to be fair to them they have been excellent throughout the season so far and every unit can have a bad day. The positive from the loss in Perth was that their batting continues to deliver and if that keeps happening you get the feeling they will win a lot more than they lose.
Melbourne Renegades
After two good wins to revive their campaign, the Melbourne Renegades were beaten out of sight in their previous match when the Brisbane Heat dished out an almighty thrashing. That loss has killed any chance of them having a decent net run rate at any stage in the event so they know if they are going to make the top four they will have to win more matches than four other sides.
Their success or otherwise is all about their batting. In their last six matches they have only conceded more than 160 once, which was last time out, but twice they have failed to register 100 with the bat and on a further two occasions they didn’t surpass 150. When they bat well they tend to win but when they don’t they are heavily exposed.
Team News
The Sixers have made one change to their squad with Justin Avednano making way for Lloyd Pope. James Vince will play his first home game for the pink half of Sydney having previously played for the other Sydney outfit.
The Melbourne Renegades remain without Aaron Finch who is still on international duty but they do have Kane Richardson back in their squad. He replaces Jon Holland for the trip having recovered from injury.

Betting
I’ll take the Sydney Sixers in this match. I just think their batsmen are more reliable than the Melbourne Renegades and that can be the difference overall here. There isn’t a huge amount between the two bowling attacks and when you throw in home conditions the Sixers look like the right bet to me.
They are functioning better with the bat and they won the previous meeting between the two teams when they restricted the Renegades to under 100. Melbourne had another mare with the bat last time out and that is happening more and more at the present time. I’ll take Sydney Sixers at even money.
