Big Bash League 2020-21 – Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Tips and Betting Preview

The Big Bash League returns from a day off on Tuesday as the competition heads back to the capital for the clash between the Sydney Thunder and the Perth Scorchers in a match between two sides who haven’t made the best start to the campaign.

Sydney Thunder have three points after two matches with the Scorchers a point behind. The latter are yet to win a match this season while the Thunder have one win on their ledger. A place in the top four is up for grabs here.

Sydney Thunder

The Sydney Thunder only have one win on their ledger but they should have two because they were in an excellent position to win their opening match against the Melbourne Stars before collapsing late on in their batting innings. There was a chance that they might have had something of a hangover after that but they didn’t let it worry them and got straight back on the horse to beat the Brisbane Heat in their second match.

To be fair to the Thunder, they looked down and out in that match but then came an amazing partnership between two all-rounders to see them overcome a side who in fairness are not up to much this season. If the Thunder are going to improve and come through this one they are going to have to go a lot better with the ball. If they do that then there is every chance they will win here because they have a batting line up that is long and deep with hitting power.

Perth Scorchers

The Perth Scorchers were well beaten in their first match when they put up a pathetic batting display but having given themselves a competitive chance in their second game against the Melbourne Stars, the rain fell at the wrong time for them and all they came away from that match with was a no result. Even in that game they let a very good position slip with the bat when they made an absolute mess of the power surge.

If Perth can deliver a complete batting performance here then that would put them on their way to victory in this match because by and large they have the bowling resources to go very well here. That batting has been fragile for a while and one of the reasons for that is because it lacks depth. What they lack in batting depth they make up for with quality at the top but even then there is a lack of glue to knit it all together.

Team News

The Sydney Thunder are set to unleash Adam Milne on the competition which significantly strengthens their bowling stock. They remain without Sam Billings though as he hasn’t completed his quarantine period just yet.

The Perth Scorchers have Jason Behrendorff back with the squad after he missed the previous game due to the birth of his child. They are still unable to call on the services of Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone as they are still yet to finish their quarantine period.

Betting

I like the Sydney Thunder here. I like them for a few reasons actually. Not only have they played the better cricket of the two in the tournament and should have won both of their matches but they just look a better side. I think their batting is better, certainly in the areas where it counts and I think that Adam Milne finally getting his campaign underway gives them an extra element with the ball, which to be fair they have needed.

The other thing the Thunder have got going for them is that both of their matches have been played here at Manuka Oval which I think is significant. The Scorchers have played their two games at Hobart and Launceston which are different dynamics to this ground. The big concern for me is that this Perth batting just isn’t deep enough and if you get into them early then in the deep overs when sides are taking the power surge and things they are using bowlers in it. Sydney look a clever side and the better side and I’m with them here.
