Panama and Mexico are already into the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals and on Sunday evening the remaining two spots will be won when the last two quarter finals of the competition take place in Cincinnati.
Two of the favourites for the title have made it through and two more meet in a tasty quarter final on Sunday evening. The warm up for that match doesn’t look too bad though so we should be in for a decent night of football.
Guatemala vs Jamaica (22.00 – Viaplay Sports 2)
The opening match in the double header on Sunday evening sees the surprise winners of Group D, Guatemala, going up against the second placed side from Group A in the form of Jamaica in a match the latter will be expected to win.
Guatemala lived something of a charmed life in the first stage of the competition but they came out on top in a thrilling final game against Guadeloupe to not just secure a spot in the quarter final but to win the section ahead of Canada which was no mean effort. Jamaica had pretty much got the job done when they held the United States in their opening match and from there the last two games and qualification was an absolute breeze. I think Jamaica are worthy favourites purely on the quality levels they have in attacking areas but Guatemala have proven tough to break down and stubborn opponents and if they could nick one at the other end they would really have something to hold onto. If Jamaica were slightly bigger I would have chanced them but they are not so I won’t.

USA vs Canada (00.30 – Viaplay Sports 2)
The last of the quarter finals is a repeat of the Nations League final of a few weeks ago when the defending champions USA take on the team they beat to win that competition in Canada in a match which will once again stoke the rivalry of these two countries.
Both these nations have chosen to rest some of their stars for this tournament and as a result we haven’t seen either at their very best. USA needed a late equaliser in their opening match against Jamaica before being able to cruise past lesser opposition in their last two group games. Canada failed to beat either Guadeloupe or Guatemala in their opening group matches but Cuba came along at the right time and an emphatic win was enough to get them through. I think it is fair to say that both teams have improved as the tournament has gone on but at the same time I think it was fair to expect that to be the case given the chances they have made to their personnel for it. I’m expecting a good quarter final here. I believe both attacks are much better than the defences they come up against here and I would be surprised if there isn’t a lot of chances at each end. Both teams to score is actually a big price here but it is one I like. I’ll take that in what should be a decent clash.
