County Cricket 2025 – Lancashire Team Guide

Lancashire were another county who had a season to forget for their standards last season. Relegation to the second division of the County Championship and two disappointing campaigns in the white ball competitions are not what is expected of a Test hosting county so a lot more is expected of the Red Rose this time around.

Last Season

County Championship: Ninth in Division 1

One Day Cup: Group Stage

Vitality Blast: Quarter Final

Club

Captain: Keaton Jennings

Overseas Player(s): Marcus Harris, Anderson Phillip, Chris Green (T20), Ashton Turner (T20)

Ins: Michael Jones

Outs: Steven Croft, George Lavelle, Jack Morley

One to watch: Rocky Flintoff – son of Andrew which will always draw attention his way but an England Lions call up in the winter confirms the promise he will hope to show this season

Championship Odds: 7/4 Coral

Strengths

Lancashire look to have done the required work to their bowling attack and if Jimmy Anderson can remain fit and do his thing to the levels we know he can at his age then Lancashire should run through some Division Two batting units. Tom Bailey, Saqib Mahmood, Luke Wood and the overseas players make a very good seam attack. If there is a criticism it could be in the lack of a top class red ball spinner but the seamers can more than make up for that.

Weaknesses

Tom Hartley would be considered the pick of the spinners at Lancashire but the fact that he hasn’t been named in the opening Championship squad of the season will tell us where he is at right now. Lancashire will be hoping that the summer isn’t too dry because the lack of a top quality spinner could be their undoing, although the recent sale of the Manchester Originals has certainly given them plenty of funds to find one for the second part of the campaign.

Trophy Prospects

Lancashire are clearly going to be all out to get back to the top division in the County Championship as that is where they belong. It will be interesting to see whether that comes at the detriment of their white ball stuff. Hundred call ups and England duty will probably put paid to their better hopes in the One Day Cup but they are regulars in the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast and will be keen to appear at Finals Day once again.

England Duty

Lancashire know that they aren’t likely to see too much of Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone in the County Championship and their T20 availability will be limited by England duty too. Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood are others who could disappear on England duty while a strong start to the season will have the calls for a recall for Keaton Jennings and a first call up for Josh Bohannon getting louder.

Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 1st
