The second half of the Saturday double header in the CPL 2022 season sees two sides who have made very different starts to the season meeting when the defending champions St Kitts and Nevis Patriots take on the Trinbago Knight Riders.
St Kitts and Nevis have begun their title defence with a couple of defeats and although only two teams drop out in the first stage it is a long way back from an opening three losses. Trinbago won their only game to date and have no such worries.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
There will have been high hopes for the season for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots when they set out on the journey of it but things haven’t gone to plan so far. They got battered by both the Jamaica Tallawahs and the Barbados Royals and with those two teams forecasted to be the two strugglers this season that certainly isn’t a good start to the campaign. This tournament more than any is all about how you finish not how you start though and that is one positive.
In truth, the Patriots haven’t really been competitive in those two matches. They have been smacked around the park with the ball in hand and haven’t really been able to deliver the goods when they have had their turn to bat despite some real strength in their line up. We know they have Wanindu Hasaranga to come later in the tournament and he’ll undoubtedly strengthen them but they still need to be in contention when he arrives.
Trinbago Knight Riders
The Trinbago Knight Riders went into the tournament looking to get their title back and they made the perfect start when they beat the St Lucia Kings in their opening game. I wouldn’t say they were as good as I’m sure we’ll see them at times in this tournament but that match was a day game and for whatever reason the pitches are playing up a bit in the day games so we can probably forgive them for just doing a bit of a professional job.
There will be a time in this tournament when their batting catches fire and when it does they could do some real damage to a bowling attack. If that is here then we will be in for something special but it might also be that their bowling attack is so good that if they bowl first their matches will be routine wins without the glitz and the glamour we expect from this competition. Either way, Trinbago are going to be tough to beat.

Key Players
Andre Fletcher showed his class in the previous match for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and you would imagine they would have no chance if they don’t get off to a fast start at the top of the order so the keeper-batter is a key man.
I guess whenever Andre Russell is in a tournament everyone stops and watches to see what he can do. He was pretty quiet in the opening match but he might be needed to play a bigger role with the bat and ball here.
Betting
We might have to dodge some rain in this match which is annoying because having seen a 14.5 sixes line covered in the first match of the day I’m expecting it to be covered in this second one as well with the pitches so far in the tournament playing a whole lot better under lights than they do earlier in the day. I’m still happy to take that though because there tends to be a fair bit of leeway with regards to stoppages for the rain so hopefully we will be ok.
We have seen this Patriots attack go round the park in their opening two matches and now they get to bowl to arguably the biggest three six hitters in the competition if not the world game in Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell so if Trinbago bat first there could be absolute carnage. It hasn’t really happened for the Patriots with the bat yet but there is no shortage of hitting power in their side so the over looks a good thing here too.
