Germany and Hungary both go into their final matches of Group F of Euro 2020 on Wednesday evening knowing that a spot in the knockout stages is available for either if they can win their clash in Munich.
Germany are in a better position than the Hungarians. They know they are through with a draw in this match whereas Hungary have to win to go through to the knockout stages but to have that chance in this group is an achievement in itself.
Where to watch
This match will be shown live and in full on the BBC2 channel for us in the UK. The build-up to this one will begin at 7.30pm with the match kicking off at 8pm.
Germany
There were more than one or two question marks over the Germans heading into the tournament and those were not really answered in their opening match against France. If anything, the doubters got stronger, but an emphatic win over Portugal in the second game has now got people wondering if this is a Germany side who are going to turn up to a tournament unfancied once again and go all the way. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle but they have a chance to lay a marker down here.
There is no getting away from the issue which this German side has. You just can’t avoid the fact that it is there for the taking defensively. France should have made much more of that and Portugal scored twice against it and should have had more. Germany looked better in attack against the Portuguese but even then they were helped by some very questionable defending. They have a chance to show their value in forward areas here.
Hungary
This was always going to be the toughest of assignments for the Hungarians in this tournament. They have been drawn in with three of the elite teams in Europe so just to have the chance to progress in this final match is an achievement in itself. They have to beat Germany to do it, and that will be easier said than done, but they might be better off against them than the other two sides in the competition just purely because you know this German defence will give you a chance.
Hungary weren’t helped prior to the tournament either in the draw or the fact that they have been without their most creative player for it but they have used home advantage as best they could and the draw they picked up against France will give them the belief as much as the confidence that they could do something special. If they require any more belief and inspiration then they only need to remember that Germany were beaten here by North Macedonia in their most recent World Cup qualifier.

Team News
The injuries picked up by Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan in the win over Portugal have not been enough to keep them out of this match but the one Thomas Muller sustained may keep him out of the side. Lukas Klostermann is likely to miss out as well.
Hungary received a huge boost with the news that captain Adam Szalai has been passed fit to play in this match even though a head injury saw him go off against France in the previous match. That gives Marco Rossi no injury concerns for this game.
Betting
This is another match I don’t really want to go too deep in but we’re having a bit of joy in the player markets at the minute so I’ll go with that angle in this match. I would ordinarily have taken the goals but I can do without getting involved in a 3.5 line while any handicaps on Germany come with the threat of having to rely on that German defence and that certainly isn’t a position I want to be in, especially when a draw will do the Germans here.
Instead then I’ll focus on what I’ve seen has the Hungary weakness and that is down their left side defensively. Portugal got in quite a few times down that side in the end and the French goal came from that side too and Ousmane Dembele hit a post from that side of the pitch too. One of the issues is that Attila Fiola can be a bit of a card magnet and if he gets booked early on Hungary are in trouble. Germany are playing their wing backs so high up they are basically wingers which gives them a lot of men in the box. That makes me think Joshua Kimmich can land another assist to go with the two he picked up against Portugal. His crossing from the right will be important but he can thread a pass as well so the 13/5 on his anytime assist column being added to will suffice for me.
