Euro 2024 – Player of the Tournament Tips and Betting Preview

We have taken a look at the Euro 2024 outright market and the top goalscorer offering for the tournament and before the first ball is kicked in the competition there is just enough time to look at the player of the tournament list.

This is always a competitive betting heat given the vast amount of world class footballers that are on show and that certainly doesn’t look to be any different this time around. Gianluigi Donnarumma was a surprise winner of the award three years ago.

2012 – Andres Iniesta

Market Leaders

Kylian Mbappe is the 7/1 favourite to be the best player at the tournament and that price will be popular among those who think that France will be crowned champions but don’t want to back them at half of the price. There is a school of thought that if France win it then the new Real Madrid signing automatically wins this award and that is a fair case to make, especially as he comes with assists over goals. The question therefore is whether you think France will win the tournament.

Jude Bellingham is next in the betting at 10/1 and I guess the same situation applies with him and England that does France and Mbappe, although there are potentially more dangers in this England side than there is the France one in terms of winning this market. Bellingham is a class act though who has transformed the fortunes of this England side in a short space of time but he has had a long season having made it to the Champions League final and Southgate might protect him if given the chance. That would be a negative.

Harry Kane is a couple of points bigger in this market at 12/1 but you would imagine if he is to be a genuine runner for the best player he will have scored the most goals so it might be worth backing him in that at half the price which could win even if England bomb out in the quarter finals or semis rather than here where the winner has come from the champions in every tournament since 1996. Others look better options here.

One of those would be Phil Foden who is 14/1 to be named the best player at the tournament. He is seen as a generational talent in the Premier League but in this England side he hasn’t tied down a permanent position and not knowing exactly where he will be utilised makes betting on him difficult. Such is the wealth of attacking options that there is a scenario where Foden doesn’t even play every match as strange as that would seem so he has to go on the shelf at this price.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets in this market this year where I am going to have my main punt on Bruno Fernandes. I really do think that Portugal will go well in this tournament and if they do then the Manchester United midfielder could well be a huge feature in that. I mentioned in the top goalscorer preview how he goes at around a goal every other game for his country in the last three years but his assist record is incredibly high as well. Fernandes is likely to play every match and looks a standout option to me here.

This tournament is going to have a theme of retiring greats about it and there will be plenty of attention on them. Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, Olivier Giroud and Luka Modric are among some of those who will be playing in their final tournament and wanting to go out with a bang and the latter could be worth a bet at 66/1. I’m not convinced that Croatia go all the way in this event but their recent competition record is very strong so that can’t be ruled out and if they do go deep then Modric will stand out like a sore thumb. He is a popular player who won’t go short of attention the longer he is in the tournament and at the price can be covered with a small bet.
