The final night of the FIFA World Cup 2022 European Qualifiers for this international window takes place on Tuesday night when another set of countries look to take a step closer to sealing their passage to Qatar next year.
Things are getting tight and nervy in a number of the groups now and that should make for some exciting and dramatic action across the 14 matches which are on the schedule across the continent on Tuesday evening.
Group A
It is now officially a two horse race for top spot in Group A. Serbia currently hold that position and they will be looking to maintain that spot when they play host to Azerbaijan on Tuesday evening. All is not lost for Portugal though. They have a game in hand next month, which if they win will take them above Serbia, assuming they match their result here. They welcome Luxembourg to the Algarve in a match the Euro 2016 winners will be expected to win.
Group B
The leaders Spain aren’t in action again on Tuesday after playing in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday, which gives Sweden the chance to overtake them at the top of Group B. They welcome Greece to Solna and will have their destiny in their own hands should they win. If they don’t win and Greece do then the former European champions come right into the qualification picture. Kosovo host Georgia in the other game in the group but that doesn’t really mean a great deal.
Group C
We are set for a fascinating finish to Group C of the competition. Italy currently lead Switzerland by three points but with the Azzurri not in action, the Swiss have the chance to move level on points with the Italians when they head over to Lithuania. The other match in the group on Tuesday sees Northern Ireland travelling to Bulgaria with both teams looking to salvage a bit of pride from what has been less than desired campaigns to date.

Group D
This is another group where the leaders aren’t in action, with France away celebrating their UEFA Nations League win. That gives the three chasers the chance to close in on them a little, while also consolidating their hopes for second spot. Finland will be the first to get the chance to do that when they head away to take on Kazakhstan in the early kick off before Ukraine host Bosnia-Herzegovina in a huge match for the home side with fixtures beginning to run out for them.
Group F
Denmark have the chance to secure their place in the finals on Tuesday evening. For them the equation is pretty simple, if they win their home match against Austria they will be off to Qatar. They are also there is Scotland lose. That seems unlikely though with the Scots heading to the Faroe Islands. Scotland can actually secure second place if they win that match, although that would require Austria to lose and Israel to lose their home match against Moldova.
Group I
England have the chance to close to within a win of returning to the World Cup on Tuesday evening when they welcome a Hungary side who they thrashed as recently as last month to Wembley Stadium. England will win the group at some point so it is the race for second spot which forms the most attention. Albania currently lead Poland in that by a single point but that could all change when they meet in Tirana on Tuesday. The other match doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things but it does offer San Marino and Andorra the chance for a rare win when they meet in Serravalle.
Betting
I’ll take a couple of bets over the course of the evening with England the first focus of my attention. They host a Hungary side they spanked in Budapest last month and I’m expecting another comfortable England win at Wembley. Hungary are missing some key cogs because of injury and will be playing a second tough match in three days after a real battle with Albania on Saturday night. England are effectively playing their first game in this international window after making 11 changes for their stroll in Andorra on Saturday with the likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Declan Rice and others not seeing the pitch in Andorra. There might be an extra dimension to the attacking play of England here. The Kalvin Phillips injury offers the chance for Gareth Southgate to play a creative number eight alongside Rice, whether that is Phil Foden or Mason Mount or someone similar. Freshness might be a big thing here though and I fancy England to win this by more than a couple of goals.
Denmark can secure their qualification for Qatar on Tuesday evening and I expect them to do that in emphatic style when they host an Austria side who look like they have come off the boil despite their win in the Faroe Islands at the weekend. Austria have twice failed to beat Scotland in this group and have been bashed up by Israel and now they head to Copenhagen to take on a Denmark side who are absolutely flying right now. They have won all seven matches in their group and are yet to concede a goal. We saw just how good they are at the Euros and they have picked up where they left off since then. I don’t expect Denmark to get complacent now and they can cruise to the finals in style.
