Gibraltar Darts Trophy 2022 – Last 16 Tips and Betting Preview

It is the final day of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy on Sunday and while there is a decent European Tour event title at stake in its own right to be won, there are also places in the European Championship up for grabs as well.

That should make for a really good day of darts which has the last 16 in the afternoon and the remainder of the tournament in the evening. We’ll preview the last 16 here but as ever in these European Tour events time restrictions will deny us the chance to look at the latter stages.

First Four Matches

The afternoon is played out in draw order which means that the number one seed Luke Humphries will be first onto the stage. He will take on the Dutch player Wesley Plaisier who has had a couple of good wins to get him to this stage. When they are done Ryan Searle and Peter Wright will take to the stage looking to make the quarter finals. The third match of the afternoon sees our remaining outright bet, Josh Rock, going up against Jonny Clayton before we hit the halfway mark of the afternoon with a clash between Rob Cross and Ryan Joyce.

Later Four Matches

We come out of the interval with two really good looking matches as Michael van Gerwen looks to continue his winning run when he faces off against Jose de Sousa before Nathan Aspinall will look to make it to a second successive quarter final when he meets Dirk van Duijvenbode. The last two games of the afternoon should both be competitive affairs as Mensur Suljovic goes up against Gabriel Clemens before the final match sees Damon Heta taking on Joe Cullen for the second straight tournament.

Betting

The draw has thrown up another match between Damon Heta and Joe Cullen. They met at the World Matchplay and then at the World Grand Prix and Cullen won on both occasions and I’m going to side with him to complete the hat trick. If you read my previews of those matches then you will know that I don’t rate Heta as highly on the stage as I would on the floor and there were shades of why on Saturday when he could only record 6/22 on his doubles, averaged a mere 87.45 and generally doesn’t give off the confidence I would like on a stage.

Cullen won both of those previous matches against Heta and in truth he had plenty in hand when he hit the finishing double as well. He looked good at the World Grand Prix where it took two of the best sets the tournament has ever seen from Gerwyn Price to deny him a spot in the quarter final. This is a Cullen who has won The Masters and made the Premier League final this year. He also won in Hungary last month so he is comfortable on the stage and I’m surprised he isn’t shorter than 10/11 for this match.

Tips

Back J.Cullen to beat D.Heta for a 3/10 stake at 1.91 with Coral
