Global Super League Cricket 2024 – Hampshire vs Rangpur Riders Tips and Betting Preview

The second match of the Global Super League sees the representatives from England and Bangladesh competing in their first game of the tournament when Hampshire take on the Rangpur Riders at the Providence Stadium.

Both teams will start their tournament knowing that they probably need to win three matches of their four to make it into the final and so a winning start would be the right way to get going here, whereas losing puts the pressure on whoever comes up short.

Hampshire

This is a Hampshire side who are one of the best teams in this format of the game in England but a lot of their recent success has been through the likes of James Vince, Ben McDermott and Nathan Ellis and none of those will be around for this tournament. This is actually a young squad with the exception of a couple of canny signings but if they can hit the ground running then this Hampshire side could improve into a dangerous outfit.

Hampshire don’t tend to start competitions well and there has to be a doubt over what they have with the ball here, even allowing for the fact that they have brought Danny Briggs back for the tournament. They probably do have enough with the bat but there is no doubt that the opening pair not being here does leave a massive hole for them to overcome. Chris Wood is an inexperienced campaign which is never something I like in this format.

Rangpur Riders

The Rangpur Riders went well in the regular part of the Bangladesh Premier League season but they were unable to convert their top spot in the standings into the title and they will be hoping to create another chance of silverware here. As with most of the teams in the competition though, this is a much weaker Riders side than the one which competed in their domestic tournament and they are going to need to show they have enough depth to compete here.

I take a look down the squad list of the Rangpur side and I don’t really see much in the way of batting strength. There are a couple of top level batters in the top five but the finishing power isn’t immediately apparent. The one good thing that the Bangladesh side do have going for them is conditions here in Guyana are more Asian like and that should suit their bowling attack, which is boosted by the Caribbean stat Matthew Forde who should know these wickets well.

Key Players

Liam Dawson is going to be a big factor for Hampshire in this tournament. He can club a few balls out of the park down the order but his four overs will be key to any success that the English representatives will have here.

Rishad Hossain has plenty of talent and a huge future in the game and a platform like this tournament is a perfect one to showcase that. He also can hit a long ball but his leg spin could be particularly potent on these pitches.

Betting

Hampshire have had some turnover in players with three not available but they are clearly taking this tournament seriously given that they have signed Shan Masood and Danny Briggs who will be particularly useful in this part of the world and while I wonder just how good they are going to be in terms of winning the tournament, I look at this matchup as one that they can win against a Rangpur Riders side who will be without six of their regular top seven here.

In fact, of the players who reached double figures for appearances in the Bangladesh Premier League campaign, only two of them are in the squad for this one, although to be fair to them there is no doubting that Rishad Hossain is a very good addition. Even so, this is very much a squad that is going to need to gel and that isn’t the case with Hampshire. With the exception of Masood, everyone else who is going to play has been with Hampshire for a while, or in the case of Briggs was with them and then played with a lot of their squad in The Hundred, so they should be a more cohesive unit and can get the job done here.
