Glorious Goodwood 2021 – Day 3 Tips and Betting Preview

The third day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting takes place on Thursday with the Sussex course once again hosting some of the best horses in racing where the headline attraction on the day is the Nassau Stakes.

That is only a six runner field though so isn’t the best for betting purposes which means that we are going to look elsewhere for our bet across the Thursday action. We’ve picked out one in the opener for our interest on the day.

There’s a lack of quality racing on Day 3 of Glorious Goodwood but the opening race, a 3 year old handicap over a mile & a quarter, interests us.  There isn’t a massive field by any means, with 12 likely to run, but there’s no shortage of chances.  Mark Johnston saddles 5 of the field with King Frankel, 2nd in the London Gold Cup, the most fancied.  The form of that race hasn’t worked out too well so it’s probably worth looking elsewhere if you want to be on a Johnston runner.  Qaader needs to step up for the extra distance but is capable, whilst Mr Excellency is 2 from 2 over the trip but he’s a confirmed front runner in a race full of pace.  The favourite is Beckett’s Patient Dawn having won 2 of his last 3 but there’s a question mark whether he’s got enough improvement to land this contest and, of more interest would be Aerion Power who would have run out a good winner on his first try over this trip last time up had Mark Crehan not mistook the half furlong marker for the winning line.  With De Sousa taking the ride, he’s a big threat.   Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum has 3 in the field including Qaader, & the Crowley ridden Alfaadhel.  The last named had looked a horse going places until running poorly at Royal Ascot but his trainer said he’s in much better form now so he’s another big danger.

Betting

However, we’re siding with the 3rd of Shadwell Stud’s here in the shape of Taraashoq.  He’s the most lightly raced in the field having seen the track just the 3 times but there’s enough in his form to suggest he’s on a steep upward curve.  He ran poorly on his only start at 2 on heavy ground but being a son of Maxios, the defeat was unlikely to be a ground issue but more of an experience issue.  On reappearance, he improved to finish 5th at Leicester behind stablemate Baaeed who is now 3 from 3 & is rated a lofty 119.  That looks solid form & he backed up a good performance there by winning on his next start, a novice event at Nottingham, by just over a length.  The field was spread out at the line, suggesting this was a good performance & he certainly looked like a horse that would be suited by a step up in trip.  The extra 2 furlongs here should play into his hands & breeding suggests he could get this & further.  The one concern is whether he handles the unique nature of Goodwood but if he does, there’s plenty to suggest that he’s the one that could find the most improvement to land a competitive opener.
