Grand Slam of Darts 2022 – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The group stage of the Grand Slam of Darts concludes inside the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening as some big names look to move their way into the knockout stages of the tournament.

We saw the big names all progress from the top half of the draw on Monday evening and on Tuesday another bunch of players will look to join them in the last 16 where the standard of this competition really begins to elevate.

First Four Matches

Groups F and G are the first two groups to be concluded over the opening part of the evening. We begin in Group F where Jonny Clayton has already qualified courtesy of two 5-0 wins. Jermaine Wattimena and Leonard Gates open the night with Wattimena putting himself in a good position to go through if he wins while Gates must win 5-1 at least to stay alive. Damon Heta then takes on Clayton and he’ll need to better the Wattimena result to go through. The attention then turns to Group G where Michael van Gerwen is already through. Luke Woodhouse has the chance to join him when he meets Nathan Rafferty, who needs to win 5-1 to keep his hopes alive. When they are done Ross Smith takes on Michael van Gerwen knowing any win will send him through. MVG has already qualified.

Later Four Matches

The evening concludes with the final two matches in Groups E and H where plenty of drama could be in store for us. The first match sees Alan Soutar taking on Fallon Sherrock where Soutar will qualify with a 5-0 win but will need results to go his way with any other outcome. The next match sees Nathan Aspinall taking on Peter Wright. Wright will only need a few legs to go through but Aspinall has to win to progress if Soutar has already won. We conclude in Group H where Ryan Searle will look to move into position to make it through to the next stage. He meets Scott Williams who needs to win at least 5-3 and hope other results go his way. Whatever happens to Searle, Josh Rock will have the chance to go through if he can see off a Luke Humphries who has already qualified.

Betting

I’ll go with one over the course of the night on an evening which isn’t easy to pick out bets in. The bet I’m happy to go with is for Nathan Aspinall to beat Peter Wright. Wright hasn’t been at the races at all this week despite winning both of his matches. He saw off Fallon Sherrock 5-1 but only had an 87.59 average and then edged out Alan Soutar 5-4 but had to survive countless match darts and could only put an 89.60 average together. You wouldn’t think either performance will be enough to get the job done here so Wright needs a huge improvement.

Aspinall has a win and a defeat to his name but the positive from the fact he won 5-1 against Sherrock and only lost 5-4 to Soutar is that he is only going to need to worry about a margin of victory should Soutar win 5-0 or 5-1 earlier in the evening. Even with a 5-1 Soutar win any win would put Aspinall through on tournament average at worse so ‘The Asp’ can focus on purely winning this match and with averages of 92.41 and 93.92 he has clearly played better than Wright this week. Wright came into the tournament with his form very patchy recently whereas Aspinall was a finalist at the World Grand Prix last month and looks in confident mood. Based on what we’ve seen this week the 6/5 on Aspinall looks big, especially given that he’s won the last three meetings between the two on TV.
