Horse Racing – Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The summer spectacular meeting that is Glorious Goodwood continues at the Sussex track on Wednesday when another excellent day of top class racing takes place as the picture for the remaining big races of the year gets a little clearer.

The feature race on the second day of the meeting is the Sussex Stakes but with just five going to post in that it isn’t really a betting proposition but there are two bets on the undercard which we are happen to get involved in.

A fillies handicap run over a mile & a quarter kicks us off on Day 2, and we have 3 battling to go off favourite.  Sir Michael Stoute’s Power Of Destiny currently sits at the top of the market & whilst she’s shown promise, this is her first venture into handicap company.  Both Elladonna & Al Anoud have run in handicaps, with the former having won twice albeit in lower grades & off a lesser mark.

Betting

At a longer price, I like the chances of Warda Jamila.  She has been slightly disappointing the last twice but I’m prepared to forgive both of those runs.  Firstly, she was too keen at Royal Ascot over a quarter of a mile further than she faces today & then was then held up at Salisbury in a falsely run race.    She’s much better judged on a comfortable win at Ascot when she won off a 5lb lower mark but had plenty in hand at the line & was then just a neck 4th in a blanket finish off a mark 3lb higher than she has today.  Taking that run at Hamilton literally, she’s 3lbs better off for a neck defeat – admittedly, this is a step up in grade but with the yard in good form & a decent draw here to boot, she should go very close if reverting to her prominent racing style.

Tips

Back Warda Jamila (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 10.00 Unibet (⅕ odds 1-4)

The closing race on the card is a real puzzle, 18 runners over 7 furlongs with many in with chances.  Miss Information is on a hat trick but has a 12lb higher mark to contend with, Billyjoh was an excellent 2nd at Royal Ascot but then disappointed last weekend in the International, Metaverse comes here in cracking form, Star Of Orion could go well if he’s ready to roll on his first start of the year whilst Wobwobwob would probably have been the selection on rain softened ground.

Betting

As it is, I’m staying towards the head of the market & taking northern raider, Yorkshire, to land the spoils.  He’s still a lightly raced 4 year old, winning 3 of his 10 career starts & finishing in the money on 3 more occasions.   He dead-heated on seasonal reappearance off a 2lb lower market & was then short-headed off this mark at Doncaster, a race where he was actually in front a stride after the line.  2 lesser runs have followed, the first when the trip probably found him out & then when getting no real luck in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket.   That day, he was squeezed out at the start which put him on the back foot & then he got no run inside the last quarter mile.  I’m happy to put a line through that run & expect better today from a yard in form.   The one question mark is the draw – he has the inside berth & I’m hoping to see him adopt a prominent position, the issue being that he’ll need a load of luck if his exit from the gate is less than ideal.   That said, the yard & jockey will know that so I’d be amazed if he wasn’t sit in the first half dozen after the first furlong – if he is, he’s sure to go well.

Tips

Back Yorkshire (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Coral (⅕ odds 1-5)
