Horse Racing – Leopardstown Sunday 14th June Tips and Betting Preview

It is another busy day in the racing world on Sunday with three meetings in the UK as well as another one in Ireland as the build up to Royal Ascot later in the week really starts to intensify. They race at Newmarket, Goodwood and Doncaster while Leopardstown hosts the Irish action.

We’ve had a good look through the cards, much of which is being broadcast on ITV4 in the UK, and have decided on one race to target where we are going with two bets at extremely appealing looking prices.

5.15 Leopardstown

A big field is assured for this 1 mile handicap for horses rated 45-70 around the turning track of Leopardstown.  In these sorts of races, the draw is all important as those drawn too high can be trapped wide all the way giving away lots of ground whilst those drawn close to the rail are often the subject of hard luck stories.

Miracles In May & Plum Perfect are near the top of the market but both are drawn high.  They have been running very well on the all-weather at Dundalk but have it to prove on turf.  Trish’s Company is the one likely to go off favourite.  She’s unexposed having only seen the track 3 times and is judged on one good run when winning an all-weather fillies maiden at odds of 25/1.

Fozzy Stack has his string in good form with 6 of his 10 runners since racing returned finishing in the top 4, with 2 of them winning.  Of his 4 outside the top 4, 2 were priced in three figures so the no shows were expected.  He runs two in this & it’s hard to split the pair so, like the trainer, we are double handed in this 18 runner race where some bookies are paying 5 places.

With Chris Hayes on board, Gatsby Cap is the stable’s first string.  Half of his 14 career starts have come on turf and that’s where his best form has come.  12 months ago, he ran 4 races in relatively quick succession finishing 3221, the first 2 off a mark of 60 and the latter 2 off 65.  He’s races off just 1lb higher (66) here.

His 4 starts since can be ignored as the first 2 were off a mark of 71 which is clearly too high whilst the last 2, earlier this year, were on the all-weather where he is nowhere near as effective.    He likes a big field as he can get cover and form in 16+ runner races of 6321 underlines that.  He also has a lovely draw in stall 9.

With his good draw, workable mark and from a yard in form, he’s hard to leave out of calculations at a generous double figure price.

The second selection is Starlite Dancer.  He’s owner trained (just the 2nd run for Stack as owner) which is a good pointer especially when there’s so many other things in the horse’s favour.  He’s a maiden after 11 starts but looks ready to get off the mark here.  He has a decent draw in 12 and races off a mark of 67.

In his 6 handicap runs, it’s evident soft ground isn’t ideal & this son of Canford Cliffs should be better on faster ground.  His best effort to date was a 3rd of 17 when close up at Galway; that was on good ground.  Recently, a mark of 70 / 71 has been beyond him and it didn’t help that those runs were on soft ground.  In fact, the last twice he has been further inconvenienced by a trip short of his best which he reverts to today.

This owner trained horse is down in mark, up in trip and back on good ground.  With a useful claimer taking a further 3lbs off, he looks primed for a big run at big odds.
