Horse Racing – Newbury & Ripon Sunday 16th August Tips and Betting Preview

The racing continues on Sunday and although we are looking forward to the Ebor Festival later in the week, there is plenty to get stuck into ahead of that, beginning with no fewer than five cards throughout the UK and Ireland.

They race at Newbury, Ripon and Market Rasen in the UK on Sunday afternoon as well as at Cork and Tramore over in Ireland. After a winner from our two selections on Saturday, we have picked out two more to go at on Sunday.

This is a nice looking Class 3 handicap over the straight 7 furlongs with a big field of 18.  In form Owen Burrows saddles the favourite in Danyah but he’s a little short at 7/2 & has a 10lb rise to contend with after winning very easily on his last start.  Mottrib ran a good race behind Toro Strike at Goodwood despite pulling hard & looks a solid alternative to the favourite whilst River Nymph won well at Ascot a couple of weeks back but doesn’t look the most obvious to produce back to back good runs.

Betting

Lexington Dash disappointed in the Stewards Cup when quite well fancied but he’s taken to put that run behind him here.  He opened up this season with a pair of wins, the first in novice company & then in a handicap.   He then went to Newmarket & ran in one of the best 3 year old handicaps to have been run this year & was an excellent 4th of 17, staying on all the way to the line.  Tackling older horses at Glorious Goodwood last time out, he disappointed but didn’t get the clearest of runs but it ultimately didn’t make any difference to the result.

He has been eased 2lbs in the weights and has an extra furlong which I’ve long thought he will improve for.   That Newmarket run is the piece of form to focus on; he was held up against a pace bias, stayed on in taking fashion (is up a furlong here) and handled the soft ground well.  He will get ease in the ground here and has a good middle draw where he’ll be able to get some cover too so, at a big price, he looks a nice each way bet.

Tips

Back Lexington Dash (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 15.00 Boylesports BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)

The big race at the Yorkshire track is the Great St Wilfrid handicap over 6 furlongs where a big field of 20 head to post.  Motagally is an improving 4 year old and is the favourite here; he’s up in grade but of more concern is his draw in 20, given the pace is middle to low.  Staxton won at this track on his last start but would prefer softer ground &, whilst there’s a bit of rain around, I’m not sure it will ease enough.  Dakota Gold won this last year & could go well again.  He has a lot of weight & has been out of form in better company though.

Betting

Kimifive is the one taken to gain compensation for his Stewards Cup heartache when he was a head 2nd to Summerghand.  He won the race on his side of the track & can be considered very unlucky as he had the worst of the draw.  He is up 4lbs for that run so has to pull out more but that’s possible as he has a better draw today & I’m not convinced the opposition is as strong.  He deserves some luck having finished 2nd in no fewer than 4 handicaps in the last 12 months, including twice this term.

In fact, his form this year has been excellent which is why I expect him to go well again here.  He was 2nd at Haydock when failing to get a clear run & was then 6th in the Bunbury Cup when the gaps repeatedly closed on him.    If he gets that bit of luck, he’s sure to be in the mix & I think his middle draw might actually be a big help here as he can pick which side to go down & still challenge on the outside.

Tips

Back Kimifive (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-6)
