Horse Racing – Redcar & Kempton Sunday 21st June Tips and Betting Preview

Royal Ascot might be over but racing goes on and on Sunday there are three meetings in the UK and another one in Ireland. They might lack the glitz and the glamour of the Royal festival but they will be no less competitive.

Whether it is Royal Ascot or Redcar you still get paid out in the same currency and we’ll be looking for a couple of winners to bolster a hugely built bank over the five days in Berkshire. We’ve found one at Redcar and another at Kempton.

A biggish field here for this Class 3 handicap over 7 furlongs where Arbalet is the favourite for David O’Meara & Danny Tudhope.  He was a decent horse at 2 & 3 but lost his way last year which has seen his mark drop from 107 to just 90.  He ran 5th in a good heat at Newmarket last time out on his first start for the yard but folded a little tamely & is of little value around 2/1.   The Great Heir, from the Kevin Ryan yard who had a brilliant Day 5 at Royal Ascot, was 2nd to Mutamaasik on his last start last term but is 2lbs higher & might need this.

Betting

The one I’m drawn to is True Mason, from the Karl Burke yard who is another that had a Royal Ascot to remember.  The excellent Ben Curtis takes the ride & he should get a good tune out of the horse now dropped in grade.  He’s a 4 year old with 14 runs under his belt but has managed just the 1 win but it’s worth noting his mark has dropped from a high of 109 to just 93 today.

After winning a Nottingham novice event by over 3 lengths, he’s had 11 races, 9 of which have been in pattern company including a pair of Group 1’s & a trio of Group 2’s.  He’s run with credit in some of those too, most notably in the 6 furlong Prix Morny & Mill Reef as a 2 year old.  Reading through his form, it’s clear he doesn’t have the pace for the minimum trip & 6 furlongs, or even further, will bring out his best.

Today, he has cheekpieces on & is upped in trip to 7 furlongs, both for the first time, & that could make the difference.  Last time out, he was 5th of 11 in a Class 2 behind Mubakker who had been the Wokingham favourite before being withdrawn on account of the ground.  He was tenderly ridden that day yet stayed on really well & finished full of running, albeit 7 lengths back.

Down in grade, down 2lbs in mark & upped in trip, he’s sure to be thereabouts.

Tips

Back True Mason (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 8.00 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

Just 9 go to post for this Class 4 handicap for 3 year olds over a mile.  Cognac is having his first run in a handicap for Mark Johnston, with William Buick taking the ride, & he has good claims but this is his first go on the all weather & isn’t exactly thrown in.  Mon Choix was 2nd last time out but is up in mark & grade, so cannot be backed at his current odds, whilst Dramatic Sands was decent at 2 but is thoroughly exposed & is having his first run since October.

Betting

At a bigger price, School Of Thought has a good shout & is James Tate’s only runner on the card.   He had 2 runs at Chelmsford as a 2 year old, finishing 2nd in the latter of those over this trip but it’s his run this term that caught my eye.

He was stepped up to 1 mile 2 furlongs for a hot handicap at Yarmouth where he finished 7th behind Celestran who’s since gone on to run in Listed company & 3 others who’ve finished in the frame at Royal Ascot.  That day, the pace was really quick & those on the front end paid the price, in fact the first 6 home were the last 6 at the 3 furlong pole & all ran on past beaten horses.  Our selection raced front rank all the way &, despite fading, he still finished at least 5 lengths in front of any other racing midfield at worst.   He emerges as the horse with most credit from the race & provided the fractions set today aren’t ridiculous, he should go close back on the all weather off 1lb lower in an easier race.

Tips

Back School Of Thought (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Betfair BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)
