The Indian Premier League continues with one match on Friday afternoon as the Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad head towards the halfway mark of their IPL 2023 campaign when they meet in Chepauk.
These two teams are at the top and the bottom of the logjam in the table below the top two teams so the two points could see them in a much better position at the end of the day to the beginning of it.
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings have won three of their opening five matches. They would be looking for more consistency than that but to be fair to them there hasn’t been a consistent team in the tournament yet and the one which can find that in the second half of the campaign will probably give themselves a great chance of being crowned champions. To be fair to Chennai, their two defeats were very narrow ones so they could easily have won all five matches with a bit more luck.
The Super Kings have been involved in a number of high scoring matches this season. That is unlike them. Usually they are able to restrict the opposition and then use their resources to navigate a run chase. I’m sure they will want to get back to that plan but injuries to a couple of bowlers have put them back a little bit. The new impact player rule is making for more high scoring matches anyway so if Chennai are going to go deep in the competition this high scoring trend might need to continue.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
This has been a real up and down beginning to the campaign for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. They were heavily beaten in their opening two matches and then easily won their next two before going down to the Mumbai Indians in their latest encounter. That has left them one defeat more than wins this term so they will be eager to level up the ledger as once you start falling behind you are under pressure to win and catch up.
The Sunrisers’ batting was the issue in their opening two defeats but it was their bowlers which came up short in the last one, although to be fair to them the Mumbai Indians have the most feared top six in the competition and when you run into them at the wrong time you can go the distance whoever you are. They couldn’t quite chase down 193 but they gave it a decent go so their batting remains in good order so they just need their bowlers to come back to the party.

Key Players
If the Sunrisers Hyderabad are going to get a team in trouble then it is usually with the new ball so if Devon Conway can marshal the early stages and build into his innings he could go a long way to winning this one for the home side.
Aiden Markram is getting more and more important in 20 over cricket for whoever he plays for and could have a big role to play here. Not only will he be needed to fuel the middle overs but his spin offering could come into play against the Chennai left-handers.
Betting
Chennai Super Kings have a wonderful record on home soil but their matches have been a little more high scoring and had a touch of the lottery about them for my liking and I think the Sunrisers Hyderabad are beginning to come to the boil. I wouldn’t want to take on the Chennai home record but I’m not sure I want to trust their bowling attack. Ordinarily I would look at the over for runs but the line is over the 340 mark and you can get some horrible wickets on this ground so I don’t want to chance that.
One bet I will go with for this match is for Aiden Markram to cover his performance line. That line is at 30.5 which feels a little low for a player who I expect to be heavily involved in this contest. He is a key figure in the middle order for Hyderabad and will be in key positions in the field, as he showed with three catches against Mumbai in the previous match. I expect his spin bowling to come into the game here too so with three scoring methods in play I expect this line to be covered.
