We have a double header of action in the Indian Premier League on Saturday when the IPL 2023 season continues for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals in the opening game of the two to be played.
These two sit in the bottom three starting out on the day so the need to win is there for both of them, particularly the Capitals who have yet to win on the season and who have played a match more than Bangalore.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
It looked like this might be the season that the Royal Challengers Bangalore wanted when they absolutely battered the Mumbai Indians in their opening match but the two matches since then have thrown up all the issues they have had before when the tournament has been played on home grounds in India. Their bowling has been ruthlessly exposed, although to be fair to them they have been done up with their death specialist Reece Topley dislocating his shoulder and being out for the season.
The bowling has been a real problem in recent times. The two matches they have played since that win over Mumbai has seen them cough up scores of 204/7 and 213/9 and even allowing for the fact the ground they play on is tiny you are putting yourselves under so much pressure conceding those kind of scores. Help comes in the form of Wanindu Hasaranga here but he is probably going to replace David Willey so how much stronger they are with the ball remains to be seen.
Delhi Capitals
You kind of got the feeling that when news broke about the seriousness of the motor accident that Rishabh Pant was involved in that the Delhi Capitals were going to feel the full effect of his absence. His injuries have led to two things. Their middle order misses an absolute gun and a home one at that and they have had to turn to an overseas player as the captain and it is incredibly rare for overseas captains to succeed in these franchise leagues where there is a limit on international players in a team.
The other problem the Capitals have is while their stand-in captain David Warner is at least scoring runs, he isn’t scoring them nearly quickly enough and that is piling the pressure on that middle order which is shy of Pant. They do get Mitchell Marsh back after he left for his nuptials and missed the last game but he’s done absolutely nothing in the tournament either. The Capitals are crying out for big performances from overseas players but need some home talent to stand up as well.

Key Players
I believe Wanindu Hasaranga is the best leg spinner in the world at the minute and he should get the chance to show that in this match. Not only will his spin bowling be crucial here but his big hitting down the order might come in handy as well.
Mitchell Marsh has to start coming to the party if the Delhi Capitals are going to recover from their poor start to the season. At his best he can crush any attack out of the park but having missed the Big Bash because of injury you wonder how close to 100% he is.
Betting
A day game at the Chinnaswamy is usually absolute carnage and I don’t see any reason why this one would be any different. Batters can hit through the line here and there isn’t going to be a massive amount of dew around to slow conditions down at all. If that isn’t enough then this is a match that both teams have to win then you have to think that they are both going to throw the bat at these short boundaries so I’m expecting the ball to see plenty of air time in this one.
The two matches at this venue so far this season have yielded 20 and 27 sixes and I certainly don’t see that total coming down many in this match. Delhi might not be winning matches but they have plenty of hitters of the cricket ball and if any of them come off, particularly if it is a Mitch Marsh or a Prithvi Shaw then they can certainly do some damage. There is power throughout the Bangalore batting and as such a 15.5 sixes line doesn’t look nearly enough to me.
