Ireland look to continue to prove their worth on the international stage this week when they host India in two T20 internationals, the first of which takes place on Wednesday. Ireland have shocked big sides before and if they can perform with credit in this series it would do them no harm.
This is the prelude to India taking on England for the remainder of the summer and while they will be expected to win both these matches they are certainly not easing themselves in gently against opposition that can be dangerous on their day.
Ireland
Ireland have been playing a fair amount of international cricket recently. They have played their first Test match in which they pushed Pakistan close, and since then they have taken on Scotland and the Netherlands in a T20 series which should have them spot on for these two matches. I think they might accept winning could be beyond them but if they run India close on a couple of occasions it will do them good moving forward.
I would suggest if they are going to push the powerhouse that is India close them they are going to have to ensure their batsmen fire both individually and as a collective unit as their bowling attack is very much their weak link in this format of the game. If they do have a mountain of runs in them then they might catch India cold.
India
It is fair to say that India will have a much tougher test to come but they don’t want to be letting their eyes off these matches and look ahead to taking on England else they could easily come unstuck. Virat Kohli is not the sort of man to let his side do that anyway so I’m expecting India to come out and put a marker down.
India’s batting will probably always be their strength in this format of the game but against the lower ranked sides their mystery spinners will probably be their biggest asset. Even in conditions which may not suit spin they have bowlers who can bamboozle batsmen and they will be able to bowl with freedom knowing there are plenty of runs in their side.
Team News
Ireland are set to unleash pace man Joshua Little on the Indians here with a number of all-rounders making up their side including Simi Singh, who has Indian routes. Boyd Rankin is also expected to feature.
India need to decide whether to play a third seamer or the second spinner. It will be the latter even allowing for the small ground. The other decision is who to bat in their middle order. After his wonderful IPL you would think KL Rahul is assured of a spot.

Betting
I’m expecting a high scoring match here. Ireland have been busy scoring runs against the Netherlands and Scotland in a recent T20 series and while that might not prepare them for facing this Indian attack they are trained in smacking balls out of the park. India are expected to score well against a bowling attack which can be a little one paced too.
I would be amazed if a blinding deck is not produced here given that keeping India sweet is worth plenty of coins for the Irish cricket board and on a small ground that should ensure the runs flow throughout what is expected to be a sunny day. I’ll go over 300.5 runs here.
