Another weekend of action in the Major League Soccer season begins on Friday night with three matches on a mini card which could have a big impact on the two Conference tables ahead of the remainder of the round.
Two of the three matches are live on TV for those of us who are in the UK, although you’ll need to be a real night owl to watch the second of them, while the other game will be on the numerous streams on show so we can keep up with the action as ever.
Orlando City vs Los Angeles Galaxy (00.00)
The action begins down in Florida when Orlando City look to build on their fantastic win last time out against a Los Angeles Galaxy side who should still be smarting from a pretty lame defeat to the Colorado Rapids last time out.
Despite their 5-1 win against Cincinnati last week, Orlando City are not in the greatest form heading into this match. That was their first win in five matches although to be fair they haven’t had the easiest schedule. That is still better form than the Galaxy have shown. After a bright start to the season they have now lost their last four matches, failing to score in the last two and will be missing talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic for this one.
Orlando City are odds on for this match which probably isn’t too far off the mark but the day where I trust them at that sort of quote hasn’t yet arrived and I’m not sure it ever will. Generally matches between these two teams are high scoring and I sense this one could be too. Galaxy were pony without Zlatan last week but they’ve had another week to prepare without him here so I expect them to offer something going forward while Orlando look much better in attacking areas at the minute. The home have scored four in three of the four meetings between these two. That might not happen again but between them they can score that many.
Real Salt Lake vs Atlanta United (02.00)
The second match of the night comes from Rio Tinto as Real Salt Lake look to build on their comfortable win over Toronto FC last weekend when they host the defending champions Atlanta United in perhaps the most high profile game of the night.
Atlanta had a horrible start to their title defence but they have picked up in recent times, although a loss to 10-man New York Red Bulls last weekend may have stopped them in their tracks. Despite that they sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with matches in hand. Consistency has been something that has eluded Real Salt Lake and if their win-loss sequence at home continues here they are due to lose.
This is a match best left alone for me. Atlanta are not the free scoring side they were last season but they are pretty tight at the back and there just isn’t enough regular consistency in the performances of Real Salt Lake to trust them here. I’ll use this one as a watching brief rather than a betting one.

Los Angeles FC vs Montreal Impact (03.30)
The best team in MLS are back in action in the final match of the night when Los Angeles FC host the Montreal Impact in a match which sees two sides in the top three in their respective Conferences going hard at it.
You would have to say that Los Angeles FC have not been given a fair crack at this by the scheduler. This is their third match in just six days and there has been a trip to Dallas and back in the middle of that. They should have won in midweek but didn’t and never got the chance to save any energy so this could be tough on them. Montreal Impact have shown they can bore the best of them this season although with Ignacio Piaati back they should cover more of a goal threat.
I certainly can’t be taking LAFC with their schedule even though they are clearly the best side in the competition at present. I respect the Impact even though they are a terrible watch at the present time but I’m not sure I can back them either. That means this one is another that is best left alone.
