The third to last complete sets of matches in MLS concludes with the last four games which take place on an entertaining looking Sunday night out in America where there are some good sides on show and so much to play for.
The race for the postseason spots in both Conferences is really alive and the results on Saturday did nothing to ease the congestion so this looks a great night of football. Three of the four matches are live on TV in the UK with the other on the streaming options.
Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off in brackets)
Portland Timbers v Minnesota United FC (20.55)
FC Dallas v New York City FC (23.00)
New York Red Bulls v Philadelphia Union (23.30)
DC United vs Seattle Sounders (01.00)
Preview
The opening game of the night is a huge one for the Portland Timbers. Results went their way on Saturday evening to the extent that a victory against Minnesota United will move them back into the top seven but anything other than that and their destiny will be out of their own hands with just three matches left in the campaign. Minny themselves aren’t guaranteed a play-off spot but a win here will not just enhance that but give them a shot at a home game. The second match of the night is just as big for FC Dallas. They currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference and could be down to eighth by the time they kick off so their match against New York City, the team who currently lead the East and who are in great nick themselves, is pretty important.
The attention then turns to the Eastern Conference where although the New York Red Bulls should be secure in the top seven there is still a chance they could reach fourth and host a postseason game. Philadelphia Union are their opponents and they are playing for top seven position. DC United are also battling for a home game to open up the play-offs and their game against Seattle Sounders will be a good indication of their pedigree.
Betting
It is that final match of the night where my bet for the evening comes as DC United host the Seattle Sounders. At this stage of the season you can always pick and choose matches to target when you are the big sides like the Seattle Sounders and this is one they can afford to burn. Their destiny for a home spot in the play-offs will be in their hands come what may here and after a tough game in midweek I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they are a little flat here.
I guess you could say the same for DC United but after a horrible 11 game swing where they won just two matches they have now won successive games and look to be finding a groove again. I would think they will see it as important to maintain their positivity going into the play-offs and it is huge to get a home game so I expect DC to push on here and come out on top against an opponent who could easily be caught in two minds and who have only won four times on the road all season.
