The opening weekend of the new Major League Soccer season concludes on Sunday night when five more MLS matches take place on what looks like an excellent evening to continue the 25th campaign of the competition.
We saw some good matches and some interesting outcomes on the first day of the season and we should get more of the same on Sunday. Four of the five matches are live on TV in the UK so we can keep up to date with everything.
Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off in brackets)
Columbus Crew vs New York City FC (17.30)
New York Red Bulls vs FC Cincinnati (18.00)
Seattle Sounders vs Chicago Fire (20.00)
Los Angeles FC vs Inter Miami (22.30)
Portland Timbers vs Minnesota United (00.30)
Preview
We have five cracking matches on the card where we see the two sides who won silverware from the Western Conference last season in action. The MLS Cup champions Seattle Sounders get their season underway when they take on the Chicago Fire while Supporters’ Shield winners Los Angeles FC take on the second new franchise to get their MLS tenure underway this season in the form of Inter Miami, the side owned by a certain David Beckham.
The Eastern Conference table toppers from last term, New York City FC, are in action on Sunday as well. They take on the Columbus Crew, who I am expecting a much stronger showing from. The other New York outfit, New York Red Bulls take on an FC Cincinnati team who will be hoping to improve on last season’s dismal first campaign and then the action concludes at the wonderful Providence Park where the Portland Timbers will look to showcase their exciting attacking brand when they welcome Minnesota United to Oregon.
Betting
It is that late game where my only bet on the night comes. There are a couple of others that interest me and if Saturday didn’t provide a couple of bad beats I might have chanced them but I want to see how the likes of Chicago Fire, FC Cincinnati and especially Inter Miami perform before I take anything in their matches with any confidence. That leaves me with the big match in the Western Conference between Portland Timbers and Minnesota United.
I expect goals in this game. I’ve already made it clear that I am expecting a very attacking Portland Timbers side this season and even though they have lost Darwin Quintero, Minnesota United should be capable of imposing themselves on sides as well. Portland have signed a couple of appealing attackers and I expect Adrian Heath to have worked on the Minnesota offense play with their defence in good order last term. The goal line here is 3 and I expect that to be covered.
