We are a little over a month away from the conclusion of the regular season in the MLS 2022 campaign and that means every match from here on in carries extra importance. One of those comes on Wednesday night when New York City FC host FC Cincinnati.
The champions New York City will be looking to go third in the Eastern Conference table with a win here while Cincinnati will move into the top seven and be in control of their own destiny if they can avoid defeat.

The match will be shown live and in full on the Free Sports channel for us in the UK. The build-up begins at 1am with the match kicking off shortly after. It is also available on the bookmaker streaming service.
New York City FC
The champions New York City FC have had a really fluctuating season. It started in an up and down nature while they were playing in the Champions League and then when they were starting to get into a groove Ronny Deila left for pastures new and then since then it has all been a bit of an inconsistent mish mash. They go into this match probably in the worst form they have been in at any stage after losing six of their last seven matches.
New York City FC will point out that five of those seven have been on the road but champion sides in this competitive pick up results on the road. They did enough good work early in the season that means they are likely to be around in the postseason but given that recent away form they won’t be wanting to go on their travels as early as the first round of the play-offs so you get the impression this is a key match for the Big Apple inhabitants.

FC Cincinnati
Whatever happens from here on in on this season this has been a much improved effort for FC Cincinnati. You would argue it would have been hard not to have been an improvement because their first three seasons in the league were very average indeed but this certainly hasn’t been. What has actually been a really good season so far for the Ohio outfit is just in danger of coming apart at the seams and they could do with rectifying that here.
Cincinnati actually head to the Big Apple with one defeat in 14 matches but the problem they have is that they have drawn 10 of them and while they haven’t been losing football matches they haven’t been making any headway in the league table. As such they sit outside the top seven having occupied one of those positions throughout the campaign. Cincinnati finally kept their first clean sheet in 12 matches at the weekend and will be looking to build on that here.
Betting
It isn’t ideal that Luciano Acosta isn’t available for this match but I still expect to see some goals. This will be the eighth time that the two teams have met in MLS and we are yet to see a game with fewer than 2.5 goals in them. Furthermore, there have been some crazy scores in matches between the two. In New York we have seen scores of 5-2, 2-1, 4-0 and 5-0 while there has also been a 4-1 and 4-4 when they have met in Cincinnati.
These two teams have plenty of goals in them but perhaps just as importantly they have plenty of goals against them in recent times. Cincinnati finally kept a clean sheet for the first time in 12 last time out while New York have conceded 16 in their last seven matches. This is a match both will be eager to win for their respective needs which should bring the two attacking departments to the fore. I expect over 2.5 goals in this one.
