Big Matches
We have to wait quite deep into the evening for the televised action to come along. The first of the matches sees two sides who missed out on the play-offs in the Eastern Conference colliding when FC Cincinnati, who didn’t exactly begin this season much better, host DC United who had a good opening win. The pick of the TV matches sees the Western Conference runners up Real Salt Lake hosting the former champions Seattle Sounders and from a UK TV standpoint we round things off with what could be an MLS attendance record when Charlotte FC play their first ever MLS home match when they host LA Galaxy.
Best of the Rest
We don’t really have much in the way of league tables to go on to judge the other games so we will be doing in based on recent history and the champions New York City will be in action when they travel to take on Vancouver Whitecaps while the 2020 MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew head to California to take on San Jose Earthquakes. The action kicks off in New England where the Revolution host FC Dallas while Toronto FC take on New York Red Bulls. Chicago Fire have high hopes for the season and we might see if they can be justified when they host Orlando City while former champions Atlanta United travel to the Western Conference table toppers from last season in Colorado Rapids.
Betting
I’m still having a watching brief over a number of these sides and getting a feel for how they are going to line up and things. This is a long MLS campaign this year so we can take our time and work our way into the competition and as such I’ll begin the weekend with just the one bet. That comes up in Canada where Toronto FC play host to New York Red Bulls in a match where I expect to see some goals and potentially with goals threatened at both ends.
We shouldn’t get carried away with opening day performances but there was a lot to like about the way New York Red Bulls won at San Jose Earthquakes last week and they look set to go after Toronto FC here. Toronto FC went away to Dallas and got a point last week and I think they’ll improve for the run and will be better for being at home here. Both these teams have a good creator in behind a front man and they have runners who can stretch defences. I think this is a game where attacks will better the defences and like over 2.5 goals as a result of that.
