An entertaining round of matches in the MLS 2023 season concludes on Sunday evening when two of the more recognisable teams go at it at Lumen Field when the Seattle Sounders host Sporting Kansas City.
Seattle saw their two closest rivals fail to win on Saturday so they have the chance to move four points clear at the top of the Western Conference table. Kansas City really need to kick their season into life here if they are going to produce anything competitive this term.
Where to watch
The match will be streamed live and in full on Apple TV via the MLS Season Pass. You only need to be an Apple TV subscriber to be able to watch this as it is a free offering from the Season Pass. It will also be available with the bookmakers too.
Seattle Sounders
The Seattle Sounders have put their stall out to be the best team in the MLS this season and you would have to say that they have made a good start in that quest. They sit top of the Western Conference after 10 matches and can move further clear with a win here. That might be daunting for the rest because this is a team who generally play their best football in the second half of a campaign and if that is the case this term then they are very much Supporters’ Shield contenders.
The start to the season for the Sounders has been spearheaded by some excellent home form. They have won four of their five matches at Lumen Field this season and Stefan Frei is still to be beaten in the Seattle goal at this venue. The slight issue is one or two injuries which are beginning to build up with Christian Roldan out for this match with a concussion but they have a standout and in form marksman in Jordan Morris which bodes well.

Sporting Kansas City
If the season has started swimmingly for the Seattle Sounders, the same certainly can’t be said of Sporting Kansas City. They have had a horror start to the season and through 10 matches they are still looking for their first win of the MLS campaign. Even at this stage they might be thinking about targeting the US Open Cup and the Leagues Cup rather than MLS, although how well that will go down in Missouri remains to be seen.
If they do choose to take the US Open Cup more seriously then it might be that they head to Seattle without one or two key players with the next round of that competition coming up in midweek. Whatever they do or don’t target, SKC have to find a way to find the back of the net. They have scored just three goals in their 10 games and if they can’t start scoring goals then this is going to be a very long year for an underachieving side.
Betting
I expect Seattle Sounders to win this match. They have already beaten Sporting Kansas City 4-1 in the reverse fixture this term and they have a brilliant home record but I’m not much of a fan of backing short prices so I think we can bump the price up by backing over 1.5 goals as well. In three of the four wins they have had on this ground this season they would have covered this bet with the one which didn’t coming against a defensively astute Minnesota United side.
Sporting Kansas City are nothing like as good defensively, as evidenced by their 15 goals against them. Kansas City have conceded two or more in their last three matches and are yet to score two goals in the same game this term so were Seattle to bag a brace then you would imagine that they will have enough to win the game. The reverse meeting showed us that there is a good chance that Seattle will bag more than twice so at odds against I’m happy to risk the over 1.5 goals on top of the Seattle win for some value.
