Big Matches
There are two 100% records left in the MLS this season and one of those belongs to Philadelphia Union who aren’t in action until Sunday evening so the only one on show on Saturday are the Vancouver Whitecaps. They make the trip to FC Dallas who have made a bit of an inconsistent start so far. The three standalone matches in the early part of the night sees the MLS Cup finalists New York Red Bulls hosting Orlando City in a match between two fancied sides while Toronto FC and Chicago Fire will look to show they have both improved on poor campaigns last term. The other early game sees Los Angeles FC hosting Austin FC in a game where both need to bounce back from defeats.
Best of the Rest
Two sides who have seven points from their opening three matches are San Diego FC and Columbus Crew and they meet in a tasty late game while San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids have made good starts to their season too and they battle it out. Seattle Sounders will look to build on their emphatic win over LAFC last week when they go to St Louis City while over in the Eastern Conference, Charlotte FC and FC Cincinnati have started the season well and they meet while there is a local derby of sorts when New York City FC host New England Revolution. DC United will look to build on their win last week when they host CF Montreal.
Betting
Two bets jump out at me in the MLS on Saturday evening and they both come along in the Eastern Conference where I am expecting goals in the match between DC United and CF Montreal. We saw DC really dominate Sporting Kansas City last week and had they been a little more clinical they would have won by more than the 2-1 scoreline that they did. They had an xG of 2.01 in that match and you would imagine that the more they play this season the more ruthless they will be in front of goal and CF Montreal might be the perfect dance partners for that but on the road they will have a go. As they always do, Montreal are starting the season with a lengthy road run and they will take some beatings along the way while they wait to get home. This could be one but it is hard to see DC United keeping a clean sheet so over 3 goals looks good to me.
I also think that there is a gulf between the New York City FC and New England Revolution sides and I’m happy to take the Citizens on the -0.75 Asian line in that Yankee Stadium showdown. There are plenty of people who do power rankings in this division who have the New England Revolution as the worst team in MLS. With Carles Gil in the side I can’t bring myself to putting them there but I only have the equally as bad Toronto FC and Sporting Kansas City below them and with Leo Campana out with a hamstring injury this looks like a tough night for the Revolution. New York City FC finally got their first win on the board last week but they should have beaten Inter Miami in the opening week and in Alonso Martinez they have one of the better strikers in MLS. City won all three meetings between this pair last term and I expect them to win this one too.
