14 clubs started the MLS playoffs and now only eight remain and we will be losing two of those over the course of Wednesday night as the Conference semi-finals begin. The MLS Cup final is in sight for the four sides on show on Wednesday so we should be in for some competitive fare.
We begin in the Eastern Conference where the leaders at the end of the regular season and in action before we head for a juicy looking clash over in the Western Conference with spots in the Conference finals the reward for the winners.
New York City FC vs Toronto FC (00.00)
The opening Conference semi-final sees the table toppers in the Eastern Conference, New York City FC taking on the former champions Toronto FC for a place in the Conference final next week. NYC have had to give up home advantage for this one and move across town to Queens to play at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.
It will be interesting to see how much of a change that brings to a New York City FC side who actually finished the season really well and who have been easily the best side in the section in the second half of the campaign. Toronto FC head to the Big Apple off the back of an emphatic win over DC United on Saturday evening, although they needed extra time to achieve it which is less than ideal.
I think we will see some goals in this match. Generally these two play out high scoring matches and if the weekend was anything to go by teams are going to really go for it in this playoff series. Toronto have to have a go here. They won’t contain NYC and I think that can yield more than 2.75 goals in this one.
Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake (03.00)
The opening semi-final from the Western Conference sees the Seattle Sounders facing Real Salt Lake for a place in the Conference final where one of the Los Angeles teams will be awaiting them next week.
The Sounders were involved in an absolute epic with FC Dallas at the weekend, a clash they came through 4-3 in after extra time while Real Salt Lake came out on top in a belter against Portland Timbers and it will be interesting to see how is the bravest and most clinical in this one. Whoever it is will probably be the team to prevail.
I get that Seattle are the favourites and understand why. RSL are not as good on the road as they are at home but with the season on the line I don’t expect them to be bad here. My temptation is to take Seattle on but this really could go either way so I’m happy enough just to sit back and watch this one.
