The NFL heads to Mexico for the Monday Night Football this week, which sees the AFC West in focus as the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a clash which is going to have a significant implication on the division.
Kansas City currently lead the way in the West. They are on the same record as the Oakland Raiders but have a better division standing. The Chiefs are a couple of games back but win here throws it all wide open.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers were hit by their defeat to the Oakland Raiders last week. That was a big blow but it came on the Thursday night so they have had even longer than normal to prepare themselves for a match which is pretty close to must win even this early in the campaign. That ended a little revival of successive wins and they will want to get back to winning ways here. They have some winnable matches on the horizon and we know they generally finish the regular season well.
Defensively the Chargers are beginning to come to the boil, although that department will be severely tested in this match, they have a potent offense as well but clearly it needs to protect the ball better. Their key weapons have started to come to the party in recent weeks and that is going to be important for the Chargers moving forward for the remainder of the season.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs were expected to dominate the division this season, and although they are winning it, their defeat to the Tennessee Titans last week showed that there is a more vulnerable side to them than we might have expected. They still look offensively strong, especially with Patrick Mahomes back, but unlike last season they no longer look certain to outscore sides, so it will be interesting to see if they change tack at any point.
If they are going to go deep into the postseason, assuming they even get there, then they are going to have to do something to tighten up defensively, especially against the run where they have been gashed too often. One of the downsides of their offense being so good is their defence spend a long time on the field and we’ve seen them suffer late on in matches as a result.
Betting
I think this is a match which could go either way and in truth I’m not sure I want to be backing any of them if I’m honest. My suspicion is that the Chargers will come out on top in the game but even then I’m not convinced. It isn’t like they have home advantage and you just never quite know what you get from either team so I’ll leave the match outcome alone and head for one of the player markets.
That comes in the form of the rushing yards of Melvin Gordon. The line is 73.5 yards which looks a little low to me. Four running backs have rushed for more than 100 yards against the Chiefs this season, which includes Derrick Henry last week who pounded the Chiefs for 188 yards. With the altitude this match will be played in the expectation is that the defences will gas the longer the match goes on which should lead to some cheap yards late on if he hasn’t already made it to 74 yards by then. Whenever he gets there I’m confident Gordon goes beyond 73.5 yards.
