The AFC East is the focus of attention on the Monday Night Football this week as the New England Patriots make the short journey to the MetLife Stadium to take on a New York Jets side who finally showed us what they can offer last week.
In terms of this being a divisional match this one is entitled to be competitive but realistically the New England Patriots are going to win the division and the Jets aren’t going to make the playoffs. That is just how it is.
New York Jets
The Jets went into their match with the Dallas Cowboys last week with a 0-4 record and seemingly unable to defend their quarterback, and with most judges expecting them to take a hefty beating, however they were helped out by an awful Dallas pass rush and Sam Darnold returned from illness to guide them to a much-needed win. Confidence is always going to be high after a win but they will need to improve a lot more to come out on top here.
They are going to be tested more on offense with New England likely to come hunting the quarterback and they are certainly going to be tested more in their defence. Last week was the first time they scored more than 20pts this season, a sign that it is good to have Darnold back, but their defence has started getting worse and they have already been exposed by this New England side once this term.
New England Patriots
The Patriots may not be as strong as they were on paper last season but you look at their results and you could easily think they are. I say that because they are 6-0 for the campaign and haven’t really had to work that hard to get into that position either. We are used to seeing the Patriots win matches on offense but their defence has certainly come to the party this term too, and off the longer week the Patriots should be in decent touch here.
The defence stole the show against the New York Giants last week and worryingly for the rest of the league they are almost halfway through their campaign and are yet to concede more than 14pts. You can argue of a soft schedule as much as you like but that is a serious record. They’ve put up 30pts or more in five of their six matches as well and are already looking like the team to beat in the AFC.
Betting
It is hard to see anything other than a New England Patriots win here. They are working with that wonderful combination of piling up the points and not conceding many and that will make it hard for anyone to beat them let alone a side who are struggling in the main like the New York Jets, even allowing for their extra confidence having picked up a win last week.
I question whether New York Jets are going to be able to give Darnold the time to make plays in this match and even if they do I wonder if he has the weapons to assist him against this elite looking New England defence. New England can run the ball strongly and they can pass it well as well so I’ve got to think that even on primetime the Patriots have a 10pt win in them here.
