The second Sunday Night Football of the NFL season comes from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as the Atlanta Falcons host the Philadelphia Eagles in an appealing NFC match up which should throw up plenty of entertainment.
The Eagles picked up a victory last week and will be looking to emulate the Dallas Cowboys in their division by going 2-0 for the campaign. The Falcons were beaten by the Minnesota Vikings last week and will hope to get off the mark here.
Atlanta Falcons
Expectations were a little lower in the media as far as the Atlanta Falcons were concerned this season. I would imagine a fair bit of that is because of how strong the New Orleans Saints look in their division but even so a team who has a powerful offensive reputation usually has more love than they got. It might be that we saw some of the reasons why last week when they really struggled in attack, albeit against a top notch defender.
To be fair to the Falcons, they showed good spirit to keep on going last week as there are a number of sides who would jack it in when trailing 28-0 on the road but whether it was the Vikings softening up or the character of the Atlanta side on show, they put a decent final quarter together to build some confidence for this week. It goes without saying that they need to start better here but it would be no surprise if they deliver the goods on that front.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles also showed off their character last week. They trailed the Washington Redskins 17-0 early on in that match but powered back to win and while there would be questions to be raised about their poor start, when they did get going they looked a very efficient outfit and if they come into this match with the form they showed in the second half last week they are entitled to think they will be tough to beat.
Offensively it was almost a perfect game for the Eagles. DeSean Jackson is back in that part of the world and he justified the money spent on him with a couple of touchdowns. Carson Wentz threw for three touchdowns and 300+ yards and they established a run game so there was a lot to like about the Eagles once they got into their stride. That character of winning from miles back should not be underestimated.
Betting
I like the Eagles here but I was burned on an away side earlier on Sunday so I’m not sure I want to be taking them against a side who can pile up the offensive plays when given the chance. You have to respect the Atlanta Falcons even if I do see them being beaten here and while I’m tempted by the money line odds I think the touchdown market is the safer play.
Given how potent these offenses can be and how exploited their defences were last week I’m a little surprised that the touchdowns line is only 5.5 and I’m happy to play the over here. I think this will be an offensive battle with plenty of decent drives. Both the quarterbacks are good passers of the ball and have dynamic receivers to aim for. I expect more than 5.5 touchdowns in this one.
