Another entertaining day of action in the National Football League concludes with a tasty looking clash in the NFC West as the San Francisco 49ers host the Los Angeles Rams in the latest Sunday Night Football offering.
The Rams go into this game 4-1 for the season while the 49ers are 2-3 and with the Seattle Seahawks already 5-0 for the year both teams know that there is room for losing if they are going to keep up the heat on the NFC West leaders.
San Francisco 49ers
This hasn’t been the start to the season that the team beaten in last year’s Super Bowl would have wanted although in fairness a lot of heir issues have come about because of injuries. They haven’t just had a raft of injuries, they have been missing a lot of key players. Many of them are either back now or coming back so we should expect a distinct improvement in the 49ers but whether it comes here or a little more down the line remains to be seen.
The other issue is that their defence hasn’t been as strong this season as it was last either. That hasn’t been helped at all by losing their leading pass rusher Nick Bosa but if they are to get back to the levels that they were at last term their defence is going to need to step up and play some decent ball, especially while Jimmy Garropolo finds his footing after recovering from injury. If the 49ers can win this match it will give them a big platform to build on.

Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams look like they are getting back to the sort of levels they were at the season before last when it was them making the trip to the Super Bowl from the NFC. Aaron Donald is leading their defence to outstanding levels while Jared Goff is looking like the quarterback that the Rams picked as the first pick in the draft four years ago. The combination of the two make the Rams a very tough nut to crack at present.
The Rams are putting up plenty of points and their offense, which struggled in the main last season, looks to be right back to where it was in their Super Bowl days. They have spent a lot of money on their defence and that is already paying off because their performances have been strong and although the Rams don’t currently lead the NFC West, many judges already have them as leading Super Bowl candidates. They can showcase those credentials here.
Betting
If this match was in a couple of weeks tie when Jimmy Garropolo has had another pair of outings to get into a rhythm and get some confidence back then this could be a genuine 50:50 contest but right now more than just a slight edge has to be given to the Los Angeles Rams here. They are playing so well right now and although I certainly expect the 49ers to improve in the weeks to come, that improvement might not be immediate enough to get over the line here.
The point spread for this match is 2.5 which is low enough for me to get on the Rams here. They are putting up plenty of points and they are not conceding many and if they can get a couple of scores on the board early doors the Rams will be able to dial up all the blitzes to get Garropolo under pressure. You’ve got to think somewhere in the San Francisco quarterback’s mind will be doubt over his ankle and that all plays into the hands of the Rams to me.
