Week 2 of the NFL season begins with the Thursday Night Football which comes from the NFC East this week as the Washington Football Team host the New York Giants in a match where both sides will go in search of their first win of the new campaign.
Both sides slid to disappointing opening week defeats after a bit of optimism heading into the season. Whoever loses here will see all their optimism fade away while hope will return for whichever team gets over the line.
Washington Football Team
There were mitigating circumstances around the loss for the Washington Football Team last week in that they lost quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to injury in the middle of it. That might be a blessing in disguise long-term because I think that Taylor Heinicke is the man to bring the best out of the Washington outfit. They have gone down the journeyman route in the quarterback position for a while but they have a potential franchise player in that spot and need to let him loose.
Now is the time to let Heinicke loose because the Washington defence is sufficiently strong enough to keep sides like the New York Giants out so there is no pressure on the youngster to get involved and come out on top in a shootout. He has enough around him to move the ball down the field just by keeping it simple. If Ron Rivera and Heinicke can sort out the third down conversion, which was very ordinary last week, then they might have a chance here.

New York Giants
The New York Giants will have been disappointed to lose to the Denver Broncos at home last week and now they have to go on the road to a divisional rival looking for their first win of the season. All eyes will be on Daniel Jones in this match and the ones to come. The Giants have added a lot of offensive mite to their roster and the time for someone to lead that to better things has arrived. Jones hasn’t really ever convinced that he is the man to do it so it will be interesting to see if he can show it here.
To be fair to Jones he didn’t get the pleasure of all of those weapons last week. Saquon Barkley was eased back into action by playing less than half the snaps last week and Evan Engram was missing. The latter is also missing here and the former is up against a crack hot defensive line so Jones is going to need to find another way of getting it done. The Giants need their own defence to stay strong and put some pressure on an inexperienced quarterback.
Betting
I don’t expect to see a classic here when you consider how these two sides are going to be lined up. I think the Washington Football Team defence match up well to the New York Giants offense but at the same time with a relatively new quarterback on show and some experienced offensive teammates I’m not convinced Taylor Heinicke is going to allow the home side to cut loose and pile on the points either.
The points line in this one is 42.5 which might be a couple too high. The Giants have a decent record against Washington in recent times but this point line is 6-3 in favour of the under in the last nine meetings between the two. Off the back of a short week where neither offense has had the required time on the practice field to address their issues and after a week where between them they scored just 29 points, I’m not expecting another 13 to come along here.
