Week 7 of the NFL 2022 season concludes with the Monday Night Football which this week sees two of the biggest franchises in the history of the sport battling it out at Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots host the Chicago Bears.
These two are no strangers to winning the Super Bowl but neither look in the sort of shape that will take them to the big dance this season. A win here would offer some positivity in what has been a tough first third or so of the campaign.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots certainly haven’t made the start to the season they would have wanted and their 3-3 record is serving no real purpose given the form of the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins in the AFC East. Already the Patriots are playing for a wildcard and you’ve got to think they are going to need to go no worse than 7-4 from here if they are to achieve that. If they are to do that then they can’t afford to lose home matches to teams with losing records.
The Patriots have been without their quarterback Mac Jones for the last three matches. He is scheduled to return in this game but whether that is a good thing or not remains to be seen because the only match his replacement has lost was against the Green Bay Packers and that went to overtime. Whoever is at quarterback, they will be pleased that there are signs that the famed Patriots defence is beginning to come to the party.

Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are having another indifferent season and you would imagine if they don’t collect some positive results soon then there are going to be major repercussions once again. There were shoots of life two weeks ago when they displayed probably their best offensive performance in a while however the hope that they were built up was diminished by an average Washington Commanders side.
The Bears won two of their opening three matches but have lost their last three and need to find some consistency and dare I say it quality in their offense. In the main their defence is standing up and restricting sides, particularly when you consider the large amounts of time they are having to spend on the field because of the lack of offense they are producing so if the offense can sort things out there might be wins in them.
Betting
This is a match where I expect the defences to be on top. New England Patriots are getting a groove on after a slow start to the season but you would have to imagine that Mac Jones is going to be rusty after the better part of a month out so the Patriots’ offensive numbers might take a little bit of a dip, particularly against a defence which is more than capable of stepping up and making plays even if it isn’t the fearsome unit of old.
The other reason why I think the defences could be on top here is because the Chicago Bears’ offense has stuttered for much of the campaign save for a half against the Minnesota Vikings where they looked good when well behind. That offense is coming up against a Patriots defence which is beginning to settle down and tighten up so when you put it all together the 40.5 line looks a little on the high side to me here.
