We are into the home straight in the NFL 2024 season with Week 16 getting underway with the Thursday Night Football which takes us to the AFC West for a huge game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos.
These two teams both have winning records but the problem that they have is the Kansas City Chiefs are dominating their division so a wildcard spot looks to be the only route to the postseason and these two currently occupy the last two places for that so need to keep winning.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are the ones in the final spot in the wildcard positions so they know that were they to slip up here they would be leaving the door open for the chasing pack. A win though would have them on the precipice of securing their playoff spot, which could happen if a number of results go their way later in the weekend. That would be an ideal Christmas present as it would allow them to rest players that they need to and manage their fitness ahead of that first playoff game.
The Chargers looked like they were getting into a decent position but three defeats in their last four have left them clinging on in the wildcard race. They won’t just want to get back to winning ways to preserve their place but also to attempt to restore some confidence should they go through. The big concern is that this is a team who pride themselves on their defence but they have just been taken for 40 points by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and haven’t had much time to recover.

Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are having a fine season and a win for them here would secure their spot in the postseason and then they would be playing for a finishing position. They currently hold the number six position but when you look at the leaders of the divisions in the AFC it might pay to try and get to the five spot because going on the road to Buffalo, Kansas City or either Pittsburgh or Baltimore isn’t exactly going to be a walk in the park. Much more joy could be had by going to Houston.
Denver head to Los Angeles off the back of four successive wins but they will know that they have already been turned over by the bolts on their own patch so there is be something of a feeling of revenge here. Earlier in the campaign the talk was about the Denver defence but all of a sudden they have put up 139 points in their last four matches and are going well on both sides of the ball. If they short turnaround time doesn’t count them out then Denver are entitled to be competitive here.
Betting
This could be a tough night at the office for the Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert. His form has suddenly dropped with the poor run that the bolts have been on and his passing yards have reduced as a result of that despite the Chargers having to throw the ball from behind. In truth, the Chargers’ running game has fallen apart and that hasn’t helped the passing game because opposition defences are blitzing Herbert from all angles.
He now faces a defence which doesn’t need an invitation to blitz and with Herbert struggling with an ankle injury and supposedly limited in practice behind an offensive line which was getting battered at the weekend this could be a very long night for the Chargers triggerman. He has a passing yards line of 234.5 and while that looks low, he hasn’t covered it in any of his last four outings and in the reverse meeting when the offense was much sturdier he only threw for 237 yards. I like the under here.
