NFL 2024 – Kansas City Chiefs @ Atlanta Falcons Tips and Betting Preview

The final match of another Sunday in the NFL 2024 season takes us to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Sunday Night Football as the Atlanta Falcons welcome the champions Kansas City Chiefs to Georgia for a primetime showdown.

The Chiefs make the trip to Georgia with a 2-0 record for the season and will be eyeing up a third win. Atlanta got their first win last week and will be looking for a second here which would have them in decent shape.

Atlanta Falcons

There was talk of a much improved Atlanta Falcons heading into the season. Much of that was down to getting a quarterback who is worthy of the tag in Kirk Cousins. The pieces around him were probably largely already there but this is a Falcons side who had gone nowhere since the end of the Matt Ryan era. That talk seemed like it was misplaced when the Falcons fluffed their lines in their opening match against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

To their credit, the Falcons went on the road last week and picked up a win in the Monday Night Football and now they can give this a good go in the hunt for a first home win of the season. The offense still looked a little sketchy in Philadelphia last week so they will need to have found their groove in that department but they have only conceded 18 and 21 points in their two matches so their defence is holding up pretty well which is a positive.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-0 for their season after a couple of narrow wins over classy AFC North opponents but it hasn’t been without its problems for Patrick Mahomes and co. They outlasted the Baltimore Ravens in their opening game more than anything and then in their second match they edged out the Cincinnati Bengals in a match which could have gone either way. You sense the Chiefs are going to improve with each game so being 2-0 certainly isn’t a bad thing.

What is a bad thing is the season ending injury to Isaiah Pacheco and that is certainly less than ideal. Kareem Hunt has been signed again but he is going to take a while to get up to speed so it will be interesting to see how Mahomes leads the offense here. It might be that this is the match where the Chiefs defence needs to come to the party and if it can it would certainly help. This is a Chiefs side who have found a way in recent times though so we shouldn’t count them out.

Betting

I think the match odds and spreads and things are about right. I’m a little reluctant to get involved in light of the Pacheco injury anyway so I am going to head to the player markets for a bet on this game. There is only one way that the Falcons are going to win this match and that is to keep Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs offense off the field for as long as possible and in order to do that I expect Atlanta to run the ball as often as they possibly can.

That makes me think that the 73.5 rushing yards of Bijan Robinson is more than achievable. The only way this doesn’t cover in my eyes is either an injury or the Chiefs going three scores up and the run game of Atlanta has to step aside. Even then they should keep running the ball because this is a Chiefs defence which has ranked poorly against the run so far this season. Robinson only had 14 carries against the Eagles last week but still ran for 97 yards and he went for 68 against a much better Steelers run defence than he’ll face here. All in all I like Robinson to go over 73.5 rushing yards.
