Week 12 of the NFL season draws to a close with the regular curtain closer – the Monday Night Football. This week the match comes from Philadelphia as the Eagles host the Green Bay Packers in a match which could have plenty of significance in the NFC.
Both sides have seen teams fly clear in their division so the route to the playoffs for the pair of them would appear to be through the wildcard and in order to get one of those spots both need to get winning beginning with this match.
Philadelphia Eagles
When you look at the bare numbers on Philadelphia’s season you would say it is one of inconsistency and a 5-5 record certainly suggests that but they feel like a better side than that. They lost to the Seattle Seahawks last time out but there is no shame in that. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back here.
One area where the Eagles have improved is in their defence which is becoming very tight. Nobody has put more than 29pts up on them this year and it took a lights out Dallas side to stick that many on them. That is easing the pressure on the rookie quarterback Carson Wentz who has settled into the job very well.
Green Bay Packers
It has all gone wrong for the Packers and they appear to be on a slide that there seems to be no end to. Injuries are killing them all over the place and until they can get some defensive players back you just wonder how competitive they can be. They arrive in Philadelphia off the back of shipping 42pts to Washington last week so that alone is likely to mean morale is low.
It isn’t just the defence that is struggling though. Aaron Rodgers showed flashes of what can be done last week but the inability to run the ball has restricted him and his playbook and the whole side have struggled as a result. Green Bay will come out of this slump at some point, they are too good not to but there have been few signs to suggest it will be here.
Betting
I took the Packers on last week and I was successful and I simply have to do the same thing here. Green Bay just don’t have the depth on their defence to cover all of their injuries and that means if they are going to win they are going to have to do it in a shootout.
They are perfectly capable of that of course but when powerful Pittsburgh and Atlanta offenses could only score 18pts combined in Philadelphia this season you would think a stuttering Packers one is going to struggle.
Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles’ balanced offense should be able to move the ball regularly against this Packers defence and that, combined with the quality they have on defence, should see the Eagles run out comfortable winners in this one.
