Week 6 of the NFL season ends in the desert on Monday night when the Arizona Cardinals host the New York Jets in the curtain closer on the week. Both sides went into the season with their eyes on the playoffs and beyond but it is fair to say things haven’t gone to plan yet. Here is a chance to get back on track though.
Arizona Cardinals
It has been a stop-start season for the Arizona Cardinals partly because of poor play and partly because of injuries but if they are to chase down Seattle at the head of the division they need to find some consistency and get back to the potent offense and watertight defence that they had last year.
They have a platform to build on after Drew Stanton led the Cardinals to a win last week and now they have Carson Palmer back from concussion to pick up the reins. He will need to have a big game to get his side over the line but on paper at least this looks like a good match up for the home side.
New York Jets
Hopes were high for the Jets going into the season but they have completely diminished at the minute and already if they want to make the playoffs they are going for a wildcard. First and foremost though will be the aim of ending the three match losing streak here but that isn’t going to be easy.
Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to avoid the turnovers he has been guilty of in recent weeks but that won’t be easy against the side who lead the NFL on takeaways. Keeping the ball isn’t the only problem the Jets have though. Their secondary is leaking big plays at an alarming rate and with the receiving core the Cardinals have that are is going to be severely tested.
Betting
There are a couple of bets I like in this match. I think this is the night Carson Palmer turns up and breaks out from the shackles he has been restricted by this season. The New York Jets’ secondary is terrible so I’m expecting Palmer to pass all over them.
The Jets give up big passing plays seemingly every week. Four of the five opposing quarterbacks have been allowed to go over 295 yards this season with the one that didn’t, Alex Smith, not really set up to. Palmer has the weapons to run riot and cover a 295.5 passing yards line.
With that in mind and with the Jets’ offense leaking turnovers at a silly rate I have to think that the Arizona Cardinals can cover a 6.5 point spread. Eric Decker is out for the Jets and Matt Forte has begun to regress. Brandon Marshall remains a threat but you wouldn’t think he will get much change from Patrick Peterson.
This just looks a superb match up for the Cardinals and I fully expect them to build on last week’s win with another emphatic win to really kick their season into life.
