The first round of the Northern Ireland Open concludes on Tuesday with the remaining matches in the last 128 being played over another lengthy day of action in Belfast. As we always get in this tournament there were a couple of sizeable shocks on the opening day of the event which will have everyone on edge on Tuesday.
Once again there are three sessions of play on Tuesday and with star names such as Ding Junhui, Mark Williams, Ricky Walden and the local hero Mark Allen in action the quality should be high throughout.
Morning Session
As with the opening day, Tuesday’s action begins with eight matches. The two on the TV and streamed tables are the ones between Kyren Wilson and Hammad Miah and the clash between Ricky Walden and Sean O’Sullivan.
Mei Xiwen plays Duane Jones in one of the matches away from the cameras while Fraser Patrick faces the amateur Marc Davis. Robin Hull meets James Cahill with Lee Walker taking on Rhys Clark. The other two matches see Andrew Higginson going up against Daniel Wells and Gary Wilson plays Peter Lines.
Afternoon Session
The first set of matches in the afternoon are headed by the all-Scottish clash between Stephen Maguire and Alan McManus which is one of the televised games. The other one sees Ding Junhui taking on his countryman Yu Delu.
Away from the spotlight Rory McLeod takes on Lertsattayatthorn of Thailand while Tom Ford meets Ian Burns and Aditya Mehta plays Sydney Wilson. Eden Sharav and Oliver Lines meet each other and Yan Bingtao plays Steven Hallworth. Robbie Williams goes up against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in the other match.
The next section of games sees Mark Williams playing David Grace on one TV table and Dominic Dale takes on the other Northern Irish professional in the tournament in Joe Swail. Jack Lisowski plays David Lilley and John Astley goes up against Xiao Guodong in the other matches.
The last leg of matches in the afternoon session sees Liang Wenbo continue his quest for the £1m bounty when he faces Liang Wenbo on the main table with Anthony McGill meeting Fang Xiongman on the other. Anthony Hamilton and Boonyarit Kaettikun do battle on the outside tables as do Mark King and Igor Figueiredo.
Evening Session
All eyes will be on Mark Allen to see if he can overcome his bogey man in Mark Joyce on one of the TV tables with Ken Doherty taking on Ashley Hugill on the other. Xhao Xintong against Dave Gilbert looks a tasty match on the outside table while Matt Selt meets Jamie Barrett in the other match.
The second set of fixtures in the evening are headed by the match between Marco Fu and Ryan Day. Patrick Wallace got an invite into the event and he’s on the other main table against Michael Georgiou. The other tables sees Noppon Saengkham playing Sam Baird and Craig Steadman against Alfie Burden.
Betting
As with the first day of the tournament I’m not going too mad here. In fact I’m going to try and build on the two winners from Monday with two more bets on Tuesday. The first comes in the morning session where Rhys Clark plays Lee Walker.
The two have already met in the Home Series this season having played in the English Open and Clark won that match and I fancy he can repeat the feat here. Clark went on and beat Kyren Wilson in the round after he dispatched Walker in Manchester and there’s nothing wrong with that result. A win over Barry Hawkins aside, Walker hasn’t done much this season and he may not do a lot here either.
The other bet I’m going to take is to chance Mark Joyce to see off Mark Allen. These two don’t get on. Mark Allen freely admits that and whatever it is between them is clearly personal and as such Allen doesn’t like playing Joyce. Joyce has won four of their last five meetings so he seems to know how to get under Allen’s skin. At the prices I think it is worth seeing if Joyce can get the pressure on Allen and to see if the home man cracks.
