It is second round action all the way in the PDC World Darts Championship on Saturday evening as four more matches take place on a night where the sensational Luke Littler will headline proceedings inside the Alexandra Palace.
Including Littler, we have three world finalists, a couple of seasoned campaigners and some rising stars on the card on Saturday night on what looks like having to be the best session of the tournament so far.
Danny Noppert vs Ryan Joyce
The opening match of the night should set the tone for competitive battles as the former UK Open champion and Lakeside finalist Danny Noppert goes up against a Ryan Joyce who showed his love for set play when he made the last four of the World Grand Prix earlier in the season.
Noppert opens up his campaign here and you would have to say his record in this tournament isn’t the best when you consider that he has never been beyond the last 32 of the event despite in recent times being seeded safely inside the top 16 of the rankings. He could have his work cut out here too because Joyce is the best player who isn’t seeded at the event and who averaged a perfectly respectable nudge under 93 in his first round match and we can expect him to improve on that with the pressure off his shoulders a little. If I had to I would side with Joyce here, especially as he has won four of their five meetings, but this has a feeling of a match which could go to a tiebreak and I’d rather not lose because my player hasn’t got the throw.
Raymond van Barneveld vs Nick Kenny
The second match of the night will see the former world champion Raymond van Barneveld getting a quest for a sixth world title up and running when he takes on a Nick Kenny who has to win to keep his playing rights for next season. Luke Humphries awaits the winner in the third round.
You would imagine this one is all about Barneveld. If he can find his finishing boots then you would imagine his scoring consistency will be enough to get the job done but if he starts missing and the shaking of the head begins then Kenny will build in confidence and could cause what I actually think would be a bigger upset than the odds would suggest. I wouldn’t rule Kenny out here by any means but I would like more than we are getting in terms of the price if I was going to be lured in so I’ll give this one a miss too.

Luke Littler vs Ryan Meikle
All eyes will be on the penultimate match of the evening when Luke Littler starts his quest to go one better than he did in this tournament last year. The darts world were hoping he would be taking on Fallon Sherrock here but Ryan Meikle didn’t read that script and it is he who will face the young superstar instead.
This one is definitely all about Littler. While there is a lot of attention on him and potentially more than there has ever been given the size of this tournament and the expectation level that he carries into it, he has never shown that the scrutiny bothers him and it would be a surprise if he doesn’t play somewhere near a 100 average here and if he does that he should have few problems in making it through regardless of what the score is. The intrigue will come in just what Littler can do in terms of 180s, big finishes or dare we say it even the nine dart leg. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some real fireworks here but I can’t find anything of betting interest in this one.
Damon Heta vs Connor Scutt
The last match of a really good looking Saturday night at Alexandra Palace gives us an Ashes battle as the Australian number one Damon Heta goes up against the rising star that is Connor Scutt in what looks a great closer to the session.
Heta has been a good player for a couple of years but he still doesn’t convince me on the big stage. He never has but he is getting better slowly but surely although recent TV events have left me wondering again. Scutt seems to have no problem on the stage. He arrived here off the back of a run to the quarter final of the Players Championship Finals and then averaged 100 in his first round win here. He scores heavily but doesn’t seem to buckle on the big doubles. Heta can sometimes run into patches where he can’t score and under pressure his doubling can go missing. I think the value lies with the outsider in this one.
