Players Championship Snooker 2023 – Day 5 Tips and Betting Preview

The last of the quarter finals of the Players Championship gets played out and the opening semi-final takes place on a special looking Friday in Wolverhampton as we head to the business end of the second Duelbits Series event of the season.

The surprises continue to come in this tournament and three of the four men on show on Friday are outside the top 10 in the world rankings so it is a big day for those players. That should ensure plenty of drama and competitive snooker.

Afternoon Session

Kyren Wilson vs Gary Wilson

The last of the quarter finals forms the afternoon session action on Friday when the European Masters winner Kyren Wilson goes up against the Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson with Shaun Murphy awaiting the winner in the semi-final on Saturday night.

Both these men had good wins in their opening match this week. Kyren saw off Zhou Yuelong with a plethora of good scoring and Gary did the same to Ding Junhui. You would have to say neither was playing their best stuff going into this week but I think the form of the Gary Wilson win probably stands out a little more because Ding has plenty of experience in these big events whereas Zhou rarely plays his best in these elite setups. On that evidence it might be that Gary is value to come out on top in this match but I’m certain Kyren will have seen who is left in the event and fancy his chances of his biggest tournament win to date this week. I’m happy to take a watching brief on this one rather than get too involved from a betting point of view.

Evening Session

Joe O’Connor vs Ali Carter

The first spot in the final will be filled in the evening session on Friday when the surprise package of the season, Joe O’Connor, takes on a class act in Ali Carter who looks like he is playing some of his best snooker once again.

Both these men have played well this week and both have had to go through a deciding frame to remain in the tournament so they have had that battle that got them into the event and will fancy winning any type of match here. Carter came through his quarter final in emphatic nature but I think the tank had run out of petrol in the Robert Milkins truck going into that match so I think this will be harder work for the Captain in this one but he is riding the crest of a wave. There was so much to like about the O’Connor victory against Luca Brecel. From 4-5 he played two frames that if Ronnie O’Sullivan had played them they would have been spoken about for years so he can certainly handle himself in the pressure situations. The way these two are playing and scoring I’m expecting a tight semi-final, not least because of the opportunity that is in front of them, and expect this one to go over 9.5 frames before it is done.
