The first weekend of the new Premier League campaign ends on Sunday afternoon with a double header of action as the four sides who have yet to get their season started get the chance to do so on a good looking day of football.
Both the matches are live on TV on the Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme so that is a good reason to kick back and watch a couple of good looking games of Premier League football throughout the afternoon!
Where to watch
The matches will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League channels. The lead up to the matches will begin at 1pm with the first game starting at 2pm and the second one at 4.30pm.
Newcastle United vs West Ham United (14.00)
The opening match of the afternoon comes from St James’ Park where there is sure to be a good atmosphere as Newcastle United begin another Premier League campaign against a West Ham United outfit who will be looking to back up their top six finish last season.
Both these sides have been a little quiet in the transfer market so far this summer so whether that is a sign that they are content with what they had or are having problems getting players in I’m not sure. West Ham need to prove they can cope without Jesse Lingard who was such a driving force for them in the second half of the campaign last term while Newcastle will need to find a way of keeping their best players on the pitch. I have more questions than answers about both of these sides so I would rather have a watch about how they will go about things rather than guess with a bet.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City (16.30)
The final match of the Premier League weekend sees Manchester City begin their title defence with a trip to London to take on Tottenham Hotspur who begin yet another new era, this time under Nuno Espirito Santo.
The obvious backdrop to this match is that Manchester City are chasing the services of Harry Kane but that is more likely to be a build up story rather than the intrigue during the match as the England captain isn’t expected to start this game. I’m interested in how Spurs cope this season. They just seem to have hit a period of time since Pochettino left where they have lost what they are and have gone nowhere as a result and I’m not convinced Nuno is the man to bring them back to their former glories. City don’t have the greatest record on this ground having lost all three visits here but I would be amazed if that is something that worries them and while it was very much a mixed side that Pep put out in the Community Shield last week, a number of their players did have a more competitive friendly with which to warm up for this opener. I think that might be significant in the long run and I’d fancy the champions to kick off their campaign with a win against a side who might be in limbo for a few weeks.
