Premier League 2022-23 – Liverpool vs Everton Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The final match of the Premier League weekend comes along in the Monday Night Football which this week takes in a Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield which has a lot of intrigue and interest to it.

Liverpool go into the derby off the back of one of their worst ever Premier League performances, certainly under Jurgen Klopp, while Everton were much improved in defeating the league leaders in the first game under Sean Dyche.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Monday Night Football programme on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League channels. The show begins at 7pm and the derby kicks off at 8pm.

Liverpool

This has been a very poor season for Liverpool, one which continually gets worse rather than better. We are deep enough into the campaign now that we can suggest Liverpool just aren’t very good at the minute and that was recognised by Klopp last week when he suggested that something has to change quickly if they are to get anything out of the campaign. What that means for this match remains to be seen but Liverpool sit only just in the top half and even with a win here would still be nine points off the Champions League places.

Liverpool have lost three of their last four in the Premier League and sit bottom of the form guide in 2023, a position that nobody could have foreseen even allowing for them being so poor. Even at home they haven’t been massively convincing this term. Only two Premier League matches have been won by more than one goal at Anfield and they came against the current bottom two Southampton and Bournemouth, sides who are looking out of their depth this season. 28 goals against in 20 matches is an alarming statistic too.

Everton

In a lot of ways we can forget all that has gone before for Everton with the exception of last week where Sean Dyche took charge for the first time. I think most people expected a bit of a bounce once he went into the setup at Goodison Park but to beat the league leaders was a fine effort and keeping a clean sheet was a nice bonus on top of that. This was an Everton side that was largely underperforming under Frank Lampard, mostly due to a lack of organisation.

If they can build on that and get a win here then Everton will come out of the bottom three and start to look up the table a little rather than worry what might be. It will be interesting to see how Everton go about their work here. You would imagine they will sit deep and look to hit Liverpool in set piece and counter situations but Liverpool were so bad last week they might be there for the taking. I would be surprised if the focus is not on staying organised and hard to beat.

Team News

Jurgen Klopp is hoping that Diogo Jota will be able to return to his side after months out with injury but there will be no Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Luis Diaz or Ibrahima Konate for the Reds. Fabinho could return however.

Everton boss Sean Dyche has conceded that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is ‘touch and go at best’ as he has a hamstring injury. Neal Maupay could be the one to lead the line in his absence in an otherwise unchanged Toffees side.

Betting

I think you have to be something of a mad man to back Liverpool at odds of around 8/13 the way they are playing. Even when they do win, which hasn’t been happening very often recently, there is nothing convincing about it and every time you watch them they look even more calamitous at the back. That makes me think Everton can get something from the match, whether it is by claiming a goalless draw or taking advantage of a weak looking Liverpool defence.

Liverpool haven’t scored in their last three in the Premier League and it might be that Klopp is so tired of losing he looks to set up with a little bit more of a pragmatic approach rather than the one which sees his side easily exposed as they have been in recent times. I wouldn’t be completely surprised if these two cancel each other out for a stalemate, four of the last 10 between them have finished goalless after all, so I’ll cover no goalscorer but with more of a bet on Everton +1 on the Asian lines, something that has only lost twice at Anfield all season and that was against the bottom two.
