The Premier League weekend continues on Sunday when we have four matches taking place throughout a day where events at the top of the table and the bottom of it are in the spotlight on what we could call derby day.
Three of the matches taking place are derby clashes and three of the four matches are on TV for us to enjoy over the course of the day. The other game kicks off at the same time as a TV match so we should get regular updates on that too.
Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK TV in brackets)
Brighton and Hove Albion vs Crystal Palace (14.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
Manchester City vs Manchester United (16.30 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
Chelsea vs Brentford (19.00)
Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur (19.00 – TNT Sports 1)

We begin the day on the south coast for what I always think is a bit of a weird derby between Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. There is a fair distance between these two geographically but they don’t like each other either way. There is a fair distance between the two in the table too with Brighton riding high in the top half and Palace struggling lower down the standings so the points are huge there. When they are done the bragging rights in Manchester will be on the line when Manchester City look to arrest their terrible form when they host Manchester United for whom this will be the first derby in charge for Ruben Amorim.
The other two matches take us into Sunday evening for once where the TV cameras will take us back to the south coast as rock bottom Southampton look to provide their supporters with some pre-Christmas cheer when they host the completely inconsistent and seemingly currently out of form Tottenham Hotspur. The one match which isn’t on TV in the UK comes from Stamford Bridge where Chelsea will go in search of three points when they host poor travellers Brentford for whom this is one of the shorter trips they make in a campaign.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the afternoon and evening with the first of them coming in the Manchester derby where I think a one goal handicap on the Asian lines might be giving the visitors a little too much of a start. Manchester United are very much a work in progress under Ruben Amorim but in the four games that he has had in charge in the Premier League, he has picked up a win, a draw and two defeats but the first of those was at Arsenal where they were exposed by two corners like everyone are by the Gunners and the second the keeper had a mare with a couple of goals. He is a concern for sure but if Onana can play properly there is a result for United in this. City have only beaten two teams by more than a goal here this season. Ipswich were they first but they played right into the City hands by having a bit of a go and taking the lead while Forest were the others and they might still be wondering how they didn’t score a couple of goals. United might struggle a little at the back here but they will have huge questions over them if they can’t get at this City defence and although this group of players aren’t the best, they know they can beat City because they did it in the cup final. Amorim thrashed City with Sporting earlier in the season and I think his United side can stay within a goal to get us our money back but potentially get a result to get us a full win.
The other bet I like comes in the late TV game where Southampton host Tottenham Hotspur in a match that has to be primed for shots. Southampton are already in a position where they know they have to have a bit of a go in home matches if they are to have any chance of surviving this term and this Tottenham defence are there to be got at. At the other end we all know the issues Southampton have with shooting themselves in the foot and they are probably going to gift Tottenham half a dozen shooting opportunities at least. Spurs have to put up a positive showing here else they are really going to come under some hefty pressure and after the comments of Postecoglou after the draw with Rangers in midweek I expect a reaction. Recent shot counts in Tottenham league games are 30, 33, 22 and 32 so the 30 range is often breached. In Southampton games the numbers have been 22, 32, 32 and 34. Over 27.5 shots looks a good thing here.
