The second match of the SA20 tournament on Tuesday sees the event hit The Wanderers for the first time as local rivals Johannesburg Super Kings play host to the Pretoria Capitals in what should be a great contest.
The Super Kings haven’t started the season how they would have wanted to but they head home for the first time in this match. The Pretoria Capitals have made a fine start to their campaign and will be out to consolidate that here.
Johannesburg Super Kings
This tournament started positively for the Johannesburg Super Kings when they got the better of the Durban’s Super Giants but there were warning signs in that match of what was to come and they were not heeded to. Their top order in that match was shot out in no time and although they were rescued by a quite brilliant innings from Donovan Ferreira, the troubles at the top of the order have kept on coming and really need rectifying now.
Their last two batting efforts has been little short of pathetic and the one thing we know about this place is you have to put runs up on the board so it will be interesting to see if the Super Kings change things up. It is hard to judge their bowling efforts because their batting has been so bad they have had nothing to play with. I’ve not noticed a serious problem with the attack but they will hope to use the pace and bounce to their advantage here.
Pretoria Capitals
The Pretoria Capitals have only played two matches this season but they have won them both and won them emphatically and in really entertaining style. There was a concern that those wins had only been against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape who were the outsiders going into the tournament, but the Sunrisers showed they have something about them when they beat MI Cape Town on Monday so all of a sudden those wins look pretty good.
The one thing we’ve seen in both of the matches for the Capitals is that their batting looks extremely strong. Their two openers have both gone big in one of the two innings and their middle order have climbed all over the platform which has been laid for them. If you want to be picky you could argue that their bowling has conceded a few runs more than they would like but we have to remember they have played on two brilliant pitches.

Key Players
It might be time for Faf du Plessis to move up to open the batting and potentially swap with Reeza Hendricks. It isn’t really working for Faf at three but we saw in the Big Bash that he can give it a good crack going in first.
Will Jacks showed all of his batting prowess in the last game and these boundaries are definitely not big enough to contain him. The longer this competition goes on the more his spin bowling is likely to come into the game too.
Betting
With the weather set fair in Johannesburg and this being the first match at The Wanderers I’m expecting a high scoring match where the ball flies to all parts. This is a ground at altitude where the ball flies further than anywhere else and we saw shades of that in Centurion at the weekend and it will be further highlighted here. This isn’t a terribly big ground anyway and I’ve got to think the sixes line at 11.5 is very much on the low side.
I’m taking the over here although not quite to the extent I would have been had the Johannesburg Super Kings batting not been as ordinary as it has been. Even though it hasn’t been great they still contributed nine sixes in their opening match, one when they were skittled for 81 in the second and one on a turning track in Cape Town. There is no shortage of hitting power in their ranks though and there is plenty of it in Pretoria as well. This match should cruise beyond 11.5 sixes as long as Joburg put up an acceptable batting display.
