We have a double header in the SA20 competition on Tuesday and it begins at Boland Park where two teams who begin the day inside the top four meet when the Paarl Royals go up against the Durban’s Super Giants.
Paarl have picked up a win and two defeats to open up their season but the fact that their win was by a bonus point margin has then in fourth place. Another such victory here would take them top of the table. DSG have two wins from three and will also hit the front with a win.
Paarl Royals
The Paarl Royals went into the competition as one of the dark horses for the title. The concern, albeit still early in the campaign is they have justified what many thought was their strength heading into the competition while seeing their potential weakness exposed and the end result is a couple of defeats from three matches. They either need to get their strength, which is their batting, stronger or they need to be not quite so weak with the ball.
We saw that illustrated perfectly in the last match the Paarl Royals played. The problem they have is that match was against this very opponent so they have seen their weakness and brutally exposed it. Paarl will be hoping that Tabraiz Shamsi is back for this one although the vibes weren’t so good around him in the last match. If he isn’t fit for this one then they are crying out for someone unheralded to deliver the goods with the ball.
Durban’s Super Giants
The Durban’s Super Giants team have been involved in three really good games of cricket. They lost the first one when they let the Johannesburg Super Kings off the hook from what looked like a position they couldn’t lose from, but to their credit they didn’t wallow and dwell on that, instead they have won their last two matches and right now look the best team in the competition when we weigh everything up.
We saw in the last game that their batting can be absolutely brutal when it all comes together and it was interesting that Quinton de Kock didn’t even open the batting in that match. Given that they have coughed up 190 and 189 in the tournament to date there is clearly an issue with the ball. Those issues actually come in the final 10 overs where in each match they have been taken to the cleaners. If they can sort that issue out they could be very tough to stop.

Key Players
The top six of the Paarl Royals are so much better on paper than the bowling attack at their disposal so they really need their firecrackers to get them off to an explosive start. One of those is Jos Buttler who will be looking for some form before he leads England into an ODI series later in the month.
Quinton de Kock has shown his versatility in this tournament. He has opened the batting and he has batted at three and he is scoring runs in both positions. He will know this attack is there for the taking especially as the main spin bowler comes into his pads and he’ll look to go big again.
Betting
It is going to be extremely hot in Paarl during this match so this is going to be hard work for the two teams, especially the bowlers on show. There have been three day matches in this tournament so far and two of them have been hugely high scoring and the one which wasn’t was here when the Johannesburg Super Kings were in town but their batting hasn’t really got going yet apart from one incredible individual innings in their first game.
I think this will be a high scoring match. The reverse meeting very much was and I don’t see why this one won’t be. Boland Park wasn’t the highest scoring ground in the 50 over competition but there was nothing wrong with the pitch in the first game. Paarl are loaded with power batters but a bowling attack that looks very light. Durban’s SG have plenty of batting mite themselves but a bowling attack which three times in three have gone the distance in the second part of the innings. As long as Paarl do nothing stupid in the first few overs this should sail past 324.5 runs.
