Big Matches
The race for promotion to the Premier League is back in the spotlight on Saturday afternoon with the TV game coming from The New Den as Millwall look to strengthen their top six claims when they host a Sheffield United side who have much bigger ambitions than that this season. Sheffield United will look to restore a 10 point gap between them and third placed Middlesbrough with the latter having the chance to respond a few hours later when they host a troubled QPR side. The other standout clash on Saturday comes from Kenilworth Road where fourth placed Luton Town host the runaway leaders Burnley.
Best of the Rest
It is a big day down at the bottom of the table as well. The bottom three all have home assignments and will be looking to take advantage of them to pull themselves up from the basement. Blackpool have slid to the bottom of the table and they host Stoke City on Saturday while Neil Warnock takes charge of second from bottom Huddersfield for the first time. Birmingham City are the visitors to the John Smith’s Stadium. Wigan Athletic look like they have turned a corner under Shaun Maloney and Norwich City will provide them with a good test. Two form teams meet at the Stadium of Light where Sunderland host Bristol City.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the day with the first of them coming at the match I’ll be at as Luton Town host Burnley. It will be a sold out Kenilworth Road which should create the sort of atmosphere that the home side thrive in and I expect Luton to take the game to Burnley. They are notoriously tough for the big teams to beat at Kenilworth Road. Last season none of the promoted sides won at Luton and the same was the case the previous season too so Burnley won’t automatically have it their own way but you would imagine there will be times where their class is stamped on this contest. Luton haven’t failed to score under Rob Edwards in the league though so I’m expecting goals in this one and am happy to be on over 2.5 goals at a big looking price.
The other bet I like the look of here is Middlesbrough to get the better of QPR. In an ideal world these two would have played on the same night in midweek but one is absolutely flying at the minute and the other is in a complete slump so even if there is a comedown from their win over Sheffield United on Wednesday night, Middlesbrough should still have enough to get the job done here. QPR are struggling with a few key injuries again which never helps but especially in a three game week when rotation would ordinarily be the order of the day. Boro had Matt Crooks and Alex Mowatt on the bench on Wednesday night so there is quality there for them to change and it is hard to see anything but a home win with the form the Middlesbrough front men are in right now.
